    • btw

Hunter could have done both crimes.. and his statemenst make me think he did it

I am going to be voting for him next time

I urge everyone else to do so also, than some of us writers may survive

        • Whether I vote or not, Jonny is toast.

I also haven't figured this out and I won't have time to think today, but tomorrow I'll read all stories carefully and undoubtedly name the murderer.

              • Saturday morning, June 5th, 8 am …

The various authors gathered together in the hotel, ballots cast. Clearly Erik Larson had perpetrated the heinous crime, his insanity just an offshoot of Ann Rule’s desire to create the perfect novel. Apparently killing all of the women was too obvious for the very clever group of authors present.

He was, appropriately, killed inside the hotel, and sent downstairs to be disposed of. After the killing, the authors searched his room, confident they would find similar things to that of Ann Rule’s room.

However, they were unable to find evidence of such a thing.

                • Saturday morning, 9:30 am, McCormick Center

Eight authors remained, and half of them stood at the same table – that of Random House, Inc., discussing the previous night’s occurrences.

“Wow, that sicko …” said Dave Barry, visibly shaken. “Murdering women like that … just to mirror his book? Eww…”
“We didn’t find any proof,” said Joseph. “He might *not* have been the killer, after all…”
“But who else would have killed the two women?” said Bill. “And he was fairly instrumental in convincing us to kill the third woman, Ann … even if she was the murderess…”
“Well yes, but why would a murderer try to draw attention to another, who was making his detection more difficult?” said John.
“Perhaps … hm. Then we need to be careful …” said Bill.
“I still think Erik did it,” said Dave. “He had the motive, and plenty of opportunities. And he’s well known to be a nut. But … you can never be too careful, I say.”
“Definitely. Let’s stay around the table today, and only go off in pairs,” said Bill.
“Sounds good,” said John. “Even to the bathroom. Or for drinks – remember Tom on Thursday?”
“Agreed. Now, let’s go greet our adoring public!” said Dave…

The other four authors stood alone at their desks, each realizing a deep feeling of alone-ness, yet too worried to stray from his desk.

                  --

Later that morning, Tom Wolfe ran into Bill Bryson.
“Heya Bill, how’s it going?” asked Tom. “Meeting the adoring public?”
“Yup … and out here with Joseph, somewhere. We’re staying together, for safety, you know? But he keeps wandering off. Joseph! Get back over here, we were going to the bathrooms, not to the Simon & Schuster display …”
“Okay, have fun …” Tom said, sort of confused by the whole matter. He wandered off towards the Penguin area, as FS&G wasn’t doing much business at the moment.

                  --

John and Paul were talking in the lunch area in the middle of the floor.
“Heya, what are you doing in this neck of the woods?” asked Paul.
“Oh, Dave and I were just getting something to drink. He’s still waiting for his hot dog, over there. Heya, Dave!”
“Heya guys … how’s it going?” said Dave.
“Oh, not bad, not bad. Houghton Mifflin is pretty busy, but not my area … seems all the textbook buyers are in today. Ah well, it is how it is.”
“Don’t you feel … unsafe?” said Dave. “I mean, we weren’t able to prove Erik was the murderer …”
“Nah, there’s plenty of people around me. Heck, I feel safer around them than around you all, no offense, as it’s pretty obvious the murderer is one of us …” said Paul.
“True … true. Well, we should get back … Random House is doing some pretty good business these days,” said John.

                  --

David Sedaris wandered off from his booth at Time Warner, headed toward the bathrooms. As he neared the bathroom, he nearly tripped over … Joseph Ellis!

He hurried over to the Random House exhibit, and saw the other three Randomers – Dave Barry, Bill Bryson, and John Irving – and composed himself, and then said, “Joseph, is dead. Over – there.”

“Wha – he was right …” said Bill. “He – bah! I told him not to leave without telling me…”
“Really?” said John. “You sure he didn’t just leave with you? I didn’t see where you were the last few minutes, either …”
“I was just on the other side here – with a customer!” retorted Bill.
“Yeah, I didn’t see you either…” said Dave Barry.
“I – I … how can you accuse me! I was right here the whole time, just on the outside a little – not two seconds away! Anyway, it could have been either of you – I didn’t see you two sticking that close together, either…”
“What are you talking about? We were right next to each other practically the whole time,” said John.
“Yeah – we went to the bathroom together, went to the food shop together, even went to the AMS display together!” said Dave Barry.
“Could it have been one of the others?” said David Sedaris. “Tom is out there – and Hunter – and and Paul… they don’t have witnesses at all …”
“Maybe – but the bathroom wasn’t far from here,” said Tom, walking up from his booth a few rows down. “Much closer to Random House, in fact, than to any of ours …”
“How do you know it was a bathroom?” said David Sedaris.
“Simple; I have been listening ever since I heard that shriek you made a few minutes ago. You are quite loud,” said Tom.
“Yeah,” said Paul. “I’m much further away, and I heard you clear as day …”
“God you’re a girl,” said Hunter, walking up from the Simon & Schuster booth. “I’m halfway across the floor, and I heard that. That’s half a city block!”
“Okay, okay, so I shriek loudly. It’s not something to hold against a guy …” said David Sedaris. “Besides, I found the dead body of Joseph Ellis by nearly tripping over it. I am entitled to a LITTLE bit of loss of self-control …”
                  “Perhaps, perhaps,” said Paul.
“Yeah, whatever. A man doesn’t make noises like that,” said Hunter. “Sheesh. You’d think you were a girl in a candy store, who got a taffy stuck in her tooth! Really.”

The authors went to the snack shop for lunch, and to discuss the happenings. And … for another vote.

                        • I would point out that is exactly what the Mafia wants you to think. Or rather, that is what you, the Mafiosi Jon Miller, want us to think.
