In my game, the hideout was near Campeche. But I went and got a Letter of Marque from the Spanish first so that I could sail into the nearby towns and recruit as many warm bodies as possible.
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

I finally finished my first game. I had around 120k gold, 30k acres of land, a homely looking wife (married the first one when I should have held out for a hottie), rescued three relatives, found three lost cities, killed 9/9 famous pirates, found 9/9 buried treasures, avenged myself upon the villian, and all that happy stuff. Each time I divided up the treasure I moved up one in the difficulty but I found the top two settings to be way to difficult as even with all the extra gear which is supposed to speed you up and/or protect you at the highest level there was a 1-2 second delay on any sword fighting command. One the top two levels I routinely got my ass handed to me.

I would have liked to have seen getting married mean more. In the first pirates she at least gave you intel everytime you saw her but in this one she still only talks to you if you dance with her. What good is a wife any way?

Hmmm... damn, I can't find my aunt...

              Here's the map I have:

Here's what the navigation map looks like:

Those two maps just doesn't seem to have much in common. On the treasure map there should be water just north to San Abraham, but there isn't... And I can't find any of the few marks I have on the map
This space is empty... or is it?

Arrrggg..!!! I just found it... just north of this town there's some indian town, and just north of that town there's another town called San Abraham???

After landing near the northern town I quickly found the incan temple and some dead trees...
This space is empty... or is it?

I do think it's dumb how I have to catch the same guy 16 times to find various bits of maps to my relatives. Capture him once then torture the crap out of him until you get what you want. I believe that would be the traditional pirate method.

Indeed. At least, they should have changed his name every now and then or something...

                        • So I just started a new game. Signed up with the Brits to take me over to the Carribbean. So I figure I'd go to a Spanish port to get a letter of marque from them. Well, I find a settlement first and talk to their Mayor dude. He tells me they got this fancy new type of sugar cane growing and would I like to escort a shipping somewhere to a larger town. So I says sure thing matey, take this here sugar cane over to St.Kitts and I'll guarantee ya safe passage. And so sure enough, on the way there, we meet a pair of spanish privateers on nice new shiny sloops o' war. And they attack the Spanish transport loaded full of sugar cane. Well, me, I hold my word, so I attack the privateers and defend the sloop. But after I sink the nasty pirates, what happens? The captain of the sloop I was protecting yells "Stay clear, scurvy pirate" and gives me a broadside! Man, I ain't the one who was trying to feed the sugar cane to the fishes! That's not fair!

                          • Heh, I sank a Spanish Barque carrying a new governor. The French (installed by me) governor of Rio de la Hacha got mad at me for sinking the new governor of the city! Similarly, the Spanish Treasure Fleet is supposedly going to Rio de la Hacha all the time, despite it being in enemy hands.

                            • Escort Missions

There are various types of escort missions you can perform that you could do for your benefit to earn fame, repair reputation and hurt it (by sinking any ship attacking escorted ship) or to earn promotions.

Escorting the new Governor--Successfully escort him to his destination and that port has its economy pumped-up one level. From Poor-Modest-Prosperous-Wealthy.

Delivering Peace/War proposal--Escort this ship to its destination and peace or war is declared with that nation.

Escorting special crops--If this ship makes it to port, prices in that crop go up.

Escorting Immigrants--I forget what this one does, will edit it later.

In order to complete these missions you will have to sink 2 enemy ships from a Nation it is at war. If at war with more than one nation, those two ships will be randomly determined. There are no repercussions to you if you allow the ship to be sunk.
                              "And his word shall carry
                              death eternal to those who
                              stand against righteousness."

                              • You can also get a mission to send Paolo to a nearby town who hates you (read: they attack you when you come near), if he gets there you may enter the nation the town belongs to without being shot down
