In-story clues were there and they were easy to spot. First the killer was strong and it was said a couple of times only rah, duke and Paddy are strong.
Second, the killer was Irish and Paddy's in-story name was Kline.

I believe these two in-story clues are enough. You caught Tubs with less (just cause he was trying to frame others, which indeed was a clue).
