There's a very high setting? Either I am missing something, or you confused that with High. I think there were Low, Medium, High and Ulta High. I can play the game on Medium or High. Medium gives me no choppiness even when multiple enemies, while High can be choppy at times. I have all special effects turned on, though .

Asher, got scared yet? The audio + graphics does it . Gotta write my review without any spoilers when I get to it.

It's high then. It's the one right below Ultra.

I've only played it for 15 minutes (it downloaded at 6am and then I had to burn + install, then get ready and go to work), but I've jumped a few times already, and most of the first 15 minutes is not supposed to be scary. Very promising.

alpha version is crap. you guys should try out the beta. Its a really short level with few zombies and bulldog thingy. Thats should be easier to find.

Dont get ATI folks. That is, if you wanna run doom at it full potential.

        It still runs fine.

The last time HL2 was benchmarked, however, ATI had a huge performance lead over Nvidia, to the tune of Nvidia cards (5xxx FX) being unplayable.

Need to take both games into consideration.

Everything I've read about this so far is "fantasmamazing graphics" and "fantasmamazing sound." But what about the gameplay? The one person who actually bothered to write about it said the whole thing lacked depth. Can anyone discuss this?

After I complete it . Well, gameplay is sure standard shooter in the terms you got to shoot, but I like it a lot. Monsters are very nice, ID-style, then there are computers to interact with and such stuff. Great cutscenes, and there actually is an interesting story. Level design is much to my liking, being quite linear - I usually have the tendency to get lost on levels, so I like it when they're pretty linear, eh.

Asher, yup, first 15 minutes are great, too, already some scares, but nothing near the real experience.

              Um. It's DOOM.

If you liked DOOM I and DOOM II, you'll like DOOM III.

There is far more plot and storyline this time, and it's far more dramatic, but at its heart it's a shooter to the core.

I'm not sure I understand. You have to lower your flashlight in order to shoot? That means that if you want to shoot a monster in the dark, you can't see where you're shooting? That doesn't sound good...

That's my only real complaint, I think they were concerned if you could do both simultaneously it would be too easy.

As for how flashlight and shooting works. Yes, generally, you lower your flashlight. However, most areas aren't completely dark, there is some weak lighting, so you will probably see outline of the monster. For the occasions when it's completely dark.... learn the art of shooting by guessing, it's actually exciting. I first thought I'd dislike that flashlight-weapon switch, but it adds to the challenge in a nice way. Oh, and some monsters are a source of light.

Gameplay by the way isn't like Doom 1 or 2 obviously, in the sense than in first two parts you'd end up shooting a dozen monsters at the same time. I think I've encountered about 5 at the same time so far, but not more. Mind you, firefights are very good here.

I really messed up the first level and the first shotgun zombie got me. I'll replay it again in a bit. It runs suprising well even with my MX 420. It looks better than Morrowind at least...haven't really played any other recent first person game so I can't compare too much. But it's really smooth which is just awesome.

You guys seriously think the sound is good? I don't mean how it's designed, because the ambient sounds and the creepy factor are pretty good. The whispering is especially cool. I mean the actually quality of the sounds as in how much they are compressed. To mean, all of the sounds in the game sound like I'm listening to a 64kbps mp3. They all sound either muted or compressed. I'm running a SB Audigy 2 Platinum with fairly large 5.1 speakers. Everything else (for example Painkiller) still sounds great, so I'm sure it's just Doom3.

Someone asked about gameplay. So far it's not bad, but I'm not impressed. You don't move very fast and you can't jump for ****. If the enemy has a gun, take cover and shoot him with a pistol or machine gun. If it's an imp, bust out the shotgun, and strafe around the fireballs. If it's little spider dudes just sit in a corner with the pistol. Rinse and repeat. There aren't any big areas EVER, so there's never a chance to run all over the place and kick ass.

I'm playing on veteran btw, only because nightmare isn't unlocked yet.

Well, good for you. I suck at most FPS except Halo and Deus Ex.

The sound is entirely CPU based using their custom engine, it pretty much ignores the soundcard (until the EAX 4.0 patch, which they're forced to do due to litigation by Creative...). There's a good chance that this is perhaps more buggy, depending on your configuration.

I haven't noticed any problems with the quality of the audio, myself. I'll pay closer attention next time I play when I get home.
