  • well I did it. I finally bought a shooter game (the last shooter I bought was Doom2 ). I bought Doom3

The main problem I'm having right now is my sound cuts out after about 5 minutes of playing. Anybody know the reason? I didn't install the direct X drivers because I thought I had a new version. How do I check my direct x version? And would that affect sound?

I really haven't gotten far (in fact I just got finished getting my bio scan and having some guy tell me to get to the marine hq or something or other. I really don't want to play without sound.

    • oh and I got it for $47 at Fry's, much better than the inflated price at Best Buy.

Now if someone could just help me with my sound issue above

      • go to the run option in the start menu and type in "dxdiag", without the quotes.

I wuold install whatever drivers are with the game.

          • well I installed direct X (same version I have it looks like, but I did it anyways). And I updated my sound drivers.

Still the sound goes out after a couple of minutes of playing

And another thing, how do you guys find your way around? Is there a map feature? I often find myself wandering around in circles in these games.

I guess I'll go to the official site, hopefully I can get some help from tech support. If not, hopefully I can return this game.

            • can anyone point me in the direction of Doom3 tech support?

ID software doesn't have support for Doom3 (only the older dooms). And Doom3's annoying flash site is impossible to navigate. It seems to have info about the game, but no tech support.

Interestingly I tried updating my video drivers, but ati is saying I have no video drivers to begin with so I can't update. I would think if I had no video drivers, I wouldn't be able to run games like Doom3 and KOTOR. I'll ahve to figure that one out.

              • . I did a complete reinstall of my audio card drivers and a complete reinstall of the game. The audio still goes out. This time after about 1 minute of playing. It sounds good up until that point.

                • I tried and tried, but I just can't get this sound to work right.

I'm having some graphical errors as well. Nothing major, as overall it looks great. I think it's the shadows that are causing the problem. I can disable those.

here's a screen shot, for some reason the screen shot is all dark. It doesn't look that way in the game. But what this screen shot will show is the problem with the toilet. The shado cuts the toilet off, and it looks like there is half a toilet.

either way, I'm probably going to return this game tomorrow.

                  • The maps seem to be designed in such a way that you don't feel that you're being led straight to somewhere, but you are. I really admire the ammount of work that must have gone into getting that right. Through the whole game I knew I was on the one straight path (impossible to get lost) but it still felt as if I was in control of the route.

                    • hmm, I did find this thread. So this is a known problem. Not just an isolated problem with my computer or just a few computers.

there are a few suggestions in this thread, I'll try them out. hopefully they fix this with a patch.

btw does anyone know what reverse sound does?

here's a link to the thread

                      • btw adding this line to my doomconfig.cfg

                        bind "x" "s_restart"

allows me to restart the sound when it goes out. still a little annoying, but at least I can play the game. other people in that above thread mentioned heat problems. I wonder if that is it. I don't want to burn anything up

Super Turbo Turkey Puncher do you get anything if you keep playing that game? I played until I had over 2000 points. almost as fun as the game itself . Of course I haven't actually shot anything yet. I should be playing and not posting here. See ya.

                        • Diss, thanks for the thread. I'm glad to know that others are having problems with D3 sound also. Personally, I think the game sounds like **** on my system and I've got rockin' sound hardware. I'll try what was suggested in that thread (turning off windows hardware acceleration) if I play again to see if that helps. Id really needs to release a patch that allows for hardware sound acceleration instead of their stupid software sound.

And reverse sound simply makes the stereo sound reversed, i.e. your left is now your right.

                            • finally some shooting

Like I mentioned before I suck at shooters. Some of those guys that shoot back can be a little tough. Because when they hit you, it throws your aim off.

                              I guess I'm doing alright.

Are there any time limits in this game? That's one thing that bothers me about some shooters. I hate time limits. The only reason I bought this game was because CGW said you kind of have to go slow and cautious. That's the only type of game I want to play. I don't like run 'n gun type games.

But I'm kind of stuck now, I don't know where to go. I found the scientist, he went beserk. I wasted him. They said to go back to marine HQ so I went back through the air lock. up throught he garage. And to the upper areas. but I can't seem to find that elevator to get back topside. One passageway is covered in flame. I learned you can't go through that quickly

I'm tired now, so I'll find out in the morning.

Yes. it would actually be scary.

I would have prefered if there were no quick saves at all. Or just like in AVP, have very very limited amount of saves per mission. (In director's cut mode in AVP IIR, you get only 1 save per mission....)

Doom3's atmosphere is great and I love the fact that they made being Not able to see VS vulnerability a big issue, but Im just not that afraid with my flashlight out with quicksave, saving after each room killing monsters. Besides flashlight does pretty damn good damage.... I actually dont feel that vulnerable with it out....
