I didn't like the revolution much anyway. Spiffor it is.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

                          • Chapter 10 – Death to the tyrant

Robespierre suspected the others would accuse him of being the sadistic killer because a Jacobin club card was found on the murder scene. He knew that anybody who would accuse him, the virtue in flesh, was a traitor and a counter-revolutionary and must be summarily executed. So he drafted a list of public enemies and appeared with this list before the Committee next morning. When he came, the discussion had already begun.

“Citizens, it is clear that what Robespierre was telling us about the virtue and the Supreme Being, the reason, and the idealism was in fact a charade, a ruse he employed to conceal his primal urge to kill”, Desmoulins spoke. It appeared that the conspirators against Robespierre had convinced him to switch sides.
“Robespierre is a mere tyrant! A demonic being! A killer without remorse! He must be tried for his crimes”, Prime Minister Mirabeau demanded.
“Don’t be so hasty citizens”, Danton calmed them down. “We all know Robespierre’s devotion to the revolution.”
                            Then he turned to Robespierre.
“Do you have anything to say in your defence?”

                            Robespierre started to speak.
“Citizens, it is obvious that many of the members of our revolutionary government have sunk into the corruption so deep that they have lost their perspective and their objectivity. The revolution will fall if we don’t root out these weeds. I have made a list of public enemies and traitors who must face trials before the Committee.”
Robespierre paused. He had difficulty speaking because of his illness and he started to cough.

Robespierre’s enemies quickly seized the opportunity he presented them.
“All we hear from Mr. Robespierre the last couple of weeks are empty phrases and general accusations. He is yet to name a traitor”, Guillotin reminded the others.
“Yes Mr. Robespierre. Name the traitors”, Mirabeau repeated Guillotin’s request.
“Cough, cough… One of them is …cough… Danton. He is the traitor of the Jacobin movement with his moderate policies. The others are … cough …”
“Name the traitors”, the representatives asked, but Robespierre didn’t answer. Since he couldn’t speak, he tried to leave the building of the National assembly.

“He simply accused Danton. Bloody tyrant. I think it’s time to vote him off,” Desmoulins invited everybody else to vote the tyrant to death and the most of the citizens did that.
And Robespierre was shot trying to escape. Only wounded, he was brought to Place de la Révolution and executed without trial, without even a vote at the Committee. Yes, the conspirators foresaw that Robespierre’s talent to create enemies would be his undoing. Before the guillotine struck, Spiffor managed to say his last words.
"Go and see Desmoulins, embrace him for me, and tell him he will see me no more, that I esteem him as a patriot, but that I despise him as a man, because I have read his soul, and have seen that he is afraid I may give him away."

                            ********

When they searched Robespierre’s flat they found his No1 membership card of the Jacobin club.
“Damn it! I don’t think any more he was the killer”, Danton said.
“You Jacobins are not to be trusted any more Danton. As of now I am relieving you of your post as Commander of the French Army and assuming the command personally”, said Prime Minister Mirabeau. Then he turned to Nicholas Chauvin.
                            “Private Chauvin!”
                            “Yes Sir!”
“Take this Jacobin card and examine it thoroughly. We shall suspend the Jacobins from the government until we discover the killer.”
                            “Yes Sir!”

                            ********

In the evening Danton was drinking in a bar at Place de la Révolution. He was alone and felt defeated. He felt like the revolution was reverted, like all was lost. Yes, the events have indeed taken a backward course. The true revolutionaries, the Jacobins were dying like flies. And now their image was smeared because they had been accused of sadistic murders.

Already very much drunk, Danton decided to head home. On his way there, near Barriere Ranverse, he was intercepted by a man whom he appeared to have known well. Without a sound, Danton was quickly punched and made unconscious.

His half naked body was discovered next morning in a sarcophagus in the Musee du Louvre. Guynemer was lying there, face up, his arms crossed, apparently flogged to death.

“The Committee of Public Safety is still the forum to discuss these unfortunate events”, commented Mirabeau
“I think we should consider abolishing this Committee. After all, it’s a Jacobin device to strike fear into the hearts of the populace and their number is diminishing fast”, Necker suggested.
“OK, we’ll discuss the issue tomorrow during the session of the National Assembly.”

                              • Bloody hell.

My perfect alibi was, in the end, the death of me. Once the poisoner was killed, I knew my days were numbered, since Ljcvetko made it clear that I was not the sadist. The sadist could continue to hope against hope that the poisoner would kill me, or that I would be accused of being the poisoner; but once I survived that, I was too dangerous to leave alive.

Loinburger is likely my murderer. But keep a weary eye on Kalius.
