Chapter 9 - An elegant death


The next morning in the National Assembly there was a heated discussion about the wars France was plunged in by Jacobin blunders. A related topic was the appointment of the new Commander of the army. And a third topic was the revolutionary calendar. Previously they have already voted to death and guillotined gjramsey who was according to his own testimony already halfway to his grave.

“This was a pure madness to execute the last foreign representative to France. Now we’re sure to expect American declaration of war as well”, Prime Minister Comte de Mirabeau was furious.
“There can be no compromise with the virtue citizen Mirabeau. Anybody who publicly opposes the decisions of the Committee of Public Safety can be called before the same Committee to answer for his actions”, Robespierre threatened.
“It may be a good opportunity to appoint the new Army Commander now. I nominate Georges-Jacques Danton for the post”, Desmoulins proposed.

And the vote was in favour of Danton, who was given the rank of general and who assumed the command of the armed forces immediately.

Danton gave his inaugural speech.
“Time is short. We must try and organise our army to face combined troops of our opponents. The good thing is that we executed field marshal von Blücher. The bad thing is that a spy has killed our own military genius general Napoléon Bonaparte.”
“Yes, the defence of our beloved France is important. But we must not underestimate the virtue. The development of the French society is our foremost concern”, Robespierre added.
“To meet this objective, I’ve asked our own winner of the literary gold prise, our one and only devout revolutionary Philippe-François-Nazaire Fabre d'Églantine to reform our calendar. We need a new calendar, free from any influence of the church.”
“I’ve completed the new French calendar. It has 12 months of 30 days and extra days near the end of the year. The month names come from the nature.”

Later in a café in the city Necker, Mirabeau and Guillotin met with Duc de Bordeaux to explore the options available to those who oppose the Reign of Terror.
“I don’t know who we can count on”, Mirabeau started. “Possibly Desmoulins, surely not d'Églantine.”
“We’re few and our numbers are shrinking”, Guillotin continued. “We’re all that’s left of the great and strong Gironde. Only a shadow of its former glory.”
“Well, you shouldn’t have voted me out of office”, Necker was malicious. “I would have never allowed any of this.”
“It doesn’t matter what happened before”, Duc de Bordeaux cut the story short, “what happens next is important. I think we all agree we must try and overthrow Robespierre’s Reign of Terror.”
“OK. Robespierre has an unrivalled ability to create enemies. It’s a flaw of his character. I think we should just wait till he makes an enemy of Danton and then simply oust him”, Mirabeau made a plan.
And everybody agreed with his plan.

Later that evening Fabre d'Églantine was celebrating his newly adopted calendar at a bar at Place de la Révolution. He was pretty drunk when he left the bar and headed home. He was near his home when he saw a figure before him, standing in his way. He was so drunk that he was unable to notice the spectre earlier so he almost collided with him.
“Ah, so it’s you. Well, I can’t drink with you too. I have to go to bed. I have a busy day tomorrow presenting my calendar to the people.”
“The other person said nothing and punched d'Églantine in his face so he fainted.

The next morning a guard of the Musee du Louvre found vovan completely naked, arms and legs tied, gagged and flogged to death. The guard also reported that one of the items of the regular exhibit of the museum was missing. It was a rare, ornate porcelain vase. Everybody quickly came to the scene.

“Well the last time we turned a body, there were clues underneath it”, Danton reminded everybody. “Turn the body Chauvin!”
“Yes Sir!”
And Nicolas Chauvin turned Églantine’s body. There was a membership card of the Jacobin club there. Sadly, the name was indistinguishable.
