        • Have a good un Hex [and thanx for putting cradle together ]

here Maq i found this link on the flag of St.george link

The source i used previously reference it maybe being brought over by William the Conqueror came from an interesting series on tv recently. Some guy was exploring all the castles that got built after the norman conquest, and the origins of their architecture. Anyway he traced it back to where William had grown up and found examples of the red cross on a white background at a castle somewhere in france(I think it was in the south west?). As he was basically illigitimate he spent alot of his formative years outside of his fathers court in Normandy. The website also mentions something in the section on the battle of Hastings - William had a red cross on white as part of his banner.

Anyway its not a native 'British' thing as such(whatever that is) - much like the english themselves it came from across the channel [Heathen invaiders! ]

            • But it could also be of Italian or Greek descent(certain towns that took St.George as their patron).
So take your pick English - do you feel more French,Greek or Italian

The welsh(name given to them by the Danes meaning 'foreigner' - nice!), have, atleast in the south of the country possibly some 'lost in the shady past' connection to the Arabs or Persians - i've never found more than a few mentions of this(it seemed like a large group of people arrived by boat while trading and settled), so it all goes to show that nationality is a strange thing - and maybe we should all just try to get along better - well except when the rugby is on

sorry for the CoT's view on history

That would be the Phoenicians, they were known to have trading outposts in Britain. I think it's fairly well established the present-day Welsh people are Celtic though, any relationship with the Phoenicians would be a very, very distant one...

Happy B-day Dave! Have a good one

Red and white are very popular colours, Poland has them too i think - so maybe St.George did some things over that way?

well i can speak it pretty poorly and spell it even worse!
I have vowed to learn it well enough to get by before i die

'Y di chi yn charaeg yn cymraig?' ,would be the question you asked, but in welsh as i would speak it phoneticaly(the spelling has flaws!)-welsh being phonetic, hmmm yes Locutus it was the Phoenicians........with a name like that i wonder if their language was phonetic too?

Also i've read some stuff that makes claims about the Irish Myth stories and the people of Ireland coming from the sea to this wonderfull land - and how there could be a connection between explorers/traders from the middle east actually being these first people of Ireland! So i keep my mind open when i can Heck we are all brothers in this world, especially on Hex's birthday
