  • Hello again, Master Zso! Excellent thoughts, as always!

On the subject of open source or no, this was one of the first major discussions we had here. At this time, we have decided not to pursue an open source methodology, although I DO preface the above with the phrase "at this time." Open Source does offer some intriguing and compelling advantages, and I'm not ruling it out, down the line, but not at present.

      • 30 days more? damn...

I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

        • 30 days for what exactly? Just because the new guy might be starting then won't magically make the game happen, I think... if the progress during the last six months or so has been nonexistent, adding one guy to do some coding won't really mean a thing for us "fans", since the results won't be visible until after another 3-6 months or so. Right?

          • I'm affraid so.

            Still, it is a start.

            • Well, true to a point, Leland.

The key difference here is that we're shelling out bucks to get code, whereas before, we were making use of volunteers, and you know how life can get some times.

The code aspect of the game is prolly the most thankless part of the whole shebang. I enjoy writing the rules and playing with models. That gets me jazzed up. Hex and Busta love art, and I know that Hex has spent mass thousands of effort just creating. Same with me and experimenting with the rules on paper.

But the code...that's a bit of a different beast, and only now, having been with a project like this, do I truly understand and appreciate the difficulties of getting code generated by way of volunteers.

Believe me, this is not to naysay our volunteer coders in the LEAST! Talented guys, all, and had they more spare time, I'm quite certain that any one of them could deliver the goods. But the code is the kind of thing that truly *requires* a full time commitment to make it happen...to really tie it all together.

Thus, we shifted gears and adapted.

I have no doubt that once we get to debugging, our volunteer coders will be absolutely invaluable, to say nothing of their value as a resource for our hired coder, and in a gazillion other ways, they have, and will continue to make their presence felt in the fabric of the game.

But we've gotta get someone working on it exclusively, and that's what August first will bring about.

True, as you say, the impacts will not be seen or felt here, in the public fora, immediately, but I don't think it'll be long before we have a regular parade of screenies and progress reports, moving toward our first (we'll call it a "limited open" with more details later) beta.

Stay tuned. We haven't disintegrated as a team yet, and on August first, I believe the last piece to this puzzle drops into place.

                      • I consider this to be a HUGE milestone!!! VERY happy to have arrived at the point where this is even possible.

Oh, and Alex....no matter how you slice it, I'm doubting people will look back on our progress and call it "rushing"

well "rushing" is an overrated commoditiy in computer game design imho - just make sure the game is good and you'll make many more happy gamers

......So when can i expect to have a version to play?
