I think I had a few bad breaks this game and misplayed it as well. Combined it left no chance with you playing well.
My mistakes:
First, Planet Cult vs. Spartans was just a bad matchup. Second, I researched Eth Cal not knowing you were right next to me. I was 1/3 done when I found out where you were at and should have immediately switched to lasers, but didn't. Third, I mis-placed one of my bases because I didn't know how low the bueracracy limit was. I should have kept my unity foils together so I'd have had a better chance of capturing IODs that spawned from pods. My scouting pattern was poor. I'm not sure getting the WP so early was wise (a few bases would have been more useful). I should have upgraded all my units at my monolith before attacking. I mis-placed my second probe foil and got it killed (should have just stolen tech from the care-takers with it).
Things that did not go well, beyond my control: I was stuck between you and the Caretakers. I captured, for the entire game, precisely one native unit (an IOD) which promptly lost to a wild IOD at even odds after failing to capture it (only a 37.5% chance of that happening). I lost 3 consecutive battles at even odds early in the game and lost my first probe foil when it stole tech (another lost 50/50 chance). You had more monoliths. You found the Cybernetic Conciousness and I didn't. That was the big one. If I'd had equal ability to tech trade and another mind worm + a spore launcher, that would have turned out quite differently I think.

Yes, when I think of it now, Spartans might be the toughest opponent for planet Cult:
Lot of things being the same between these two factions,(Industry, unability to run Wealth, better police...), still:
- Spartans have better energy production, and can easily run FM (but it would be suicide against the Cult)
- They have better morale, which makes them VERY tough to beat by a native faction, and even easier to them to attack such one.
- They have D:M as a starting tech, which makes them harder to beat on the pod-popping rush (especially in the sea).
The only thing PC can count on is their greater numbers, better transports , and heavy use of fungus (=>slightly better pod-popping than Sparta!)
I'm not sure Eth Cal is a good tech bee-line on a small map... were I right next to you or not...
Switching to lasers, well I don't think was a such good decision... Since you've probed me, you would have better to do fast strikes agains my poorly-defended bases from the fungus. That was my greatest fear until I have actually infiltrated you.
After that It would have been a piece of cake if I had realised earlier that you were preparing a fast strike on your part rather than a massive one (since you were aiming for doc: loyalty).
I arrived one turn late to stop your formers form raising the land.
But I think your greatest mistake was into letting me infiltrate you: If you would have allowed a greater part of your production into Covert Ops, that would have never happened and I would have been even more unprepared that I was If you were to strike.
Otherwise, you could wait and probe from me HEC,SFF,Gene Splicing & D:AP while directing your research to another branch (IA,Green...) or leapfrogging .

I actually never knew you infiltrated me. Don't you get an pop up letting you know?
I think I'd have won if you had not been next to me, since with the WP and eth calc, I could have pop-boomed quite early if I did not need to spend industry on miltary (both units and command centers). An interesting game in any case.
