As far as I remember, the Retool strictness has a bug. You can set it to 3, but it works as 2.
    See this:

the alphax.txt editing by Darsnan and Rubin
And last time I checked, it really does not take 3 there.

The more I play civ4, the more I get frustrated.
And this is not about that my hardware is at minimum requirements, it is about the game design. Micromanagement issues, interface.
The game was supposed to be easier and faster? not quite. like 10 minutes ago I found serious issue in the way cities are manually managed. there are also some other things.
I wonder how many of these will be fixed in patches and how many left with no understanding that there are better ways to manage things in this game.

Sorry to say this, but I think the only thing we can do now is to try make changes to civ4 that will make this game better in the sense of gameplay than SMAC. Only then I would start making mod.

I will prepare later a better summary on civ4 with all its issues I can find. Just need to play it more and find all these things...

Depressing news. Perhaps start a "general Civ4 observation" thread with that as the first post?

Well, the game really needs to be better investigated. Maybe somewhere there there is some option to change those little things, though so far it is not as intuitive as stated the civ4 was supposed to be.
most serious is so far queue. building items queue.
          Anyone found it?

You get what you pay for?

Pirating a game is one thing, I can understand it in certain situations. Pirating a game then b*tching about the quality is another. I wish you'd stop being so blatant about downloading Civ4 on a forum that's possibly being read by the game's developers, esp since the good graces of the developers is helpful when trying to mod a game.

              Meh.

Isn't there an option to download it on-demand (paying online?)?

Where did you get that? I'm just interested as it doesn't come out over here for a while.

                      • Maybe it is a bit harsh from my side, so I say that there are excellent new things. Though I am devoted to details in many things. And civ4 is no exemption. Also, I kinda expected more here. I think gameplay may with time show its not obvious in the first glance interesting spots. Interface, though, could use improvements. And I am "spoiled" and I mean spoiled by SMAC...

I am organising stuff, nice additions, not so good changes, bad changes when compared to previous games, etc.

                          • Mart, I found Sullia's walkthrough useful for increasing my enthusiasm regarding the game. Perhaps a beta-testers understanding will increase your enjoyment of it?

                            • It will take some time. I have to do other things in my life too. And the game runs a bit slow on my comp. I do not know if it is due to Windows OS "flling with mud" o rsimply this kind of performance is standard.

I found though how to build a queue. As in civ3, with "shift". No wonder this feature was not mentioned, as everyone should know it from previous game. No better features although, like moving items around, inserting between other items etc. Or I just haven't found them yet.

and overall, I think I will do it in pieces. I played only 1 game till industrial era so far, so I have more and more observations still. Diplomacy, city management, map view, workers, resources, fighting between units,... It is only that observations and ideas come to various aspects of the game all the time. So if I write city managements part now, I am sure I will have more to write later. Please be patient.

And to keep spirit, coz I maybe wrote too negatively before:

Good stuff so far what comes to my mind:
                              - Planetary view of rotating globe is nice
                              - Music much better over civ3, in the original soundtracks
                              - more interesting approach to tiles/terrain types. hills are now overlay for example
                              - health is a nice addition. influence growth by increasing food consumption in the case of unhealthiness
                              - religion is an interesting element of the game. i am not deep into it yet, but it appears it can play significant strategic role in interaction with other players. I just do not know how strong yet.
                              - tile improvements different, more interesting, especially cottage-hamlet-village-town line. and there is kinda restrictions, or something like mining platform in SMAC effect. you discover a tech and your improvement works better. Was smth like that in civ3? I do not recall.

Thank you, I have seen it, first two parts so far.
Game is interesting, don't get me wrong. I am a civ fanatic. I will always be probably.
It is only that it feels too much like civ3. I expected more innovations, better interface. SMAC can really spoil someone. If you know what I mean. And someone who hasn't played SMACX will not understand - played not like 3 times total in whole life, but played many times including multiplayer.
