It is a bit annoying. Is it a glitch or part of the plan for the future?

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

That's cool isn't it. I decided that the ads have to cover the costs we have to pay for Apolyton's server each month. Originally, I wanted to add a tower on the space right of the main column. But that didn't work out without screwing up the layout. So I went for one of the default vBulletin ad slots. The only thing is that I need another one of those rectangles.

The alternative is skimlinks that is now also in its test phase.

I still could tone it down a little bit and only show it for guests. If we compare 21 users of 190 currently on the board, the loss might not be that big. But first I wanna now what the thing gives me for all users per day, and than we can ccompare.

What's less cool is when you write camping gear or dome tent and they turn into links.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

I thought that you could disable it, but that option was disabled. So now you can disable it if you like. Go to your Settings -> General Settings. Scroll down the page to the bottom, there you have the skimlink option, saying:

We use a product called Skimlinks and Skimwords to help us pay the bills for Apolyton. SkimLinks will automatically convert links to merchants (eBay, Amazon, Bestbuy etc.) that forum users have added to affiliate links when clicked. SkimWords will automatically convert product references in posts into shopping links. If you don't want these links to be enabled while you browse the Apolyton, you may disable the Skimlinks here.
Probably, I should also put a news item about it onto the front page, but I am afraid I won't get around it today.

However how cool skimlinks in turns of helping us to pay the bills I don't know yet. For the rectangles I know that they do so these are indeed cool.

The ad-rectangels in the posts, I disabled them for logged in users. Originally, they were enabled for all users, even so they were supposed to be disabled for Plus users. Yes, even so we do not advertise Apolyton Plus the accounts are still around. Now there is also a rectangle in the first post, but only for guests. I think this is fair guests do not contribute to Apolyton in form of content, while users do as long as they are logged in.

I've been reporting people with those ads. Now that I've learned this, I still will.
