Radical, man! If there was NO frame to the left of posted pics that were too large, we wouldn't have to scroll right to read the post's text. Posted pics would be BELOW the frame containing poster's avatar. That's the only real advantage I can see to it, though.

Note: I'm no site designer, so I don't really know what I'm talkin' about.

Not unless you design it yourself I think for 90% of users that wide screen (ie, postbit on wide) rather than 'long screen' (postbit on top of post) is better, particularly as more users have widescreen monitors and can afford to put stuff wide rather than long. It's a lot better organized this way, anyhow (you can just ignore the left hand side of the post if you are interested in only the post) rather than mixing it in with post information.

Restricted-EW is probably the most simple form of the post information, and doesn't lengthen most posts significantly (that would be the only advantage of doing it that way). It's probably as close to good design as I'll ever get

You shouldn't have to scroll right to see posts, anyhow, unless you have a very small screen resolution. I've shrunk my firefox to 1024x768 and it properly flows - it has to be under that to be a problem.

If you are using 800x600, then get out of the dark ages.

No, I don't do 800x600. Mine is 1680x1050 (20" iMac).

You are assuming that everyone uses a maximized browser window. I on the other hand tend to use two browser windows side by side, or one browser window with terminals next to it. For a readability point a view there shouldn't be more than about 60 characters a line (which is why the current quick reply box width is nice ), or your eyes will have to scan the screen horizontally instead of just vertically.

We currently have no style suitable in viewing in a narrow window, but I hope to find the time to create one.

I do think of the majority of users, just the users don't know what's best for them. Take any book and count the number of characters on a line, and you will most likely find that it is 60-80 characters on every line, or else you'll find the book hard to read. The same applies to web pages as well. Having a paragraph that is 60-80 characters per line, and spanning multiple lines is a lot easier to read than having one long line.

Then again I'm not saying that this should be the standard style, I'm just saying that such a style should exist.
