Duh, as the guy who got to play the Piper in our fourth grade play (cause I was the only boy in the class who could play a decent tune on the recorder) way back in deepest Brooklyn, USA, I am DEEPLY offended at that remark.

I'd say that advent calendars is a part of Christmas celebration. And thus I started celebrating Christmas on December 1 twenty years ago. On the other hand we never decorate our house for Christmas before December 23, but we celebrate Advent with candles. And at Lucia we start eating Lucia bun.

But I agree that it's too early to decorate all the smilies yet. Can't they be given candle crown on Lucia?

I'd say that advent calendars is a part of Christmas celebration.

And I believe advent calendars were around far before the "commercialization" of Christmas.

According to 1907 usage, a period beginning with the Sunday nearest to the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle and embracing four Sundays

According to present [1907] usage, Advent is a period beginning with the Sunday nearest to the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle (30 November) and embracing four Sundays. The first Sunday may be as early as 27 November, and then Advent has twenty-eight days, or as late as 3 December, giving the season only twenty-one days.
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Here Here! Back to the subject at hand: Christmas Smilies.

Actually, I would really like the smilie to have a Christmas hat on it....but I'm guessing since it is moving, it would be too much effort...

If you want to be lemmings, fine, but do it in the privacy of your own home. Don't harass those of us who have a brain...
The problem with this reasoning is this- when new years comes, people want the hats to go off because the festivities have ended. And heavens sake, the Three Kings come January 9th... Would you deny us our hats save one week, possibly two out of the year?

Additionally, these are not Christmas hats- Apolyton is non-denominational. Hannukkah is coming soon... These are Santa Hats- and Santa (The Postmodern-Society Santa, that is) has nothing to do with Religion.

Enjoy your Winter Festival Santa Hats while you can. The Festival begins December 1st and ends January 1st or 9th, depending on how you count it!

Ah, I see what the real problem here is...

No, the act itself isn't (although the hats themselves *were* invented by Coca Cola...) but you ARE participating in a hype started by commercial stores and the like to sell you Christmas products, decorations, etc. Christmas is a 2-day holiday, not a month long-one. Anything beyond that is commercial hype.

Perhaps we would best labor in the salt mines for Stalin to celebrate the turning of the seasons and the chance to break the monotony of hatless smilies- pray have pity for their balding little heads!
