If people do not have sufficient time here at Apolyton, then they don't move up in rank until they have reached certain points for each ranking.

1000 posts; been here 5 days = Settler
1000 posts; been here 90 days = Prince/King/Whatever.

(The numbers are not sugestions, just there to gicve an example of how a system may work.)

That doesn't remove the reward (if there is such) for spamming - it's just slows it down. It also adversely affects those who make a large (valid) contribution in a small amount of time.

Give everyone the ability to set their own custom title at, say, 300 posts. if the mods find a title offensive ask the poster the change it. If the poster refuses or is to slow restrict them. Voila, no reason to spam.

Civfanatics does that, and has a lower limit for having a custom avatar(posts+time limit) As a consequence i never felt the need to go above 200 posts there yet

I believe there's an effective balance than would be considerate of both conditions. Maybe a formula that consists of posts made and a quotient of posts versus days registered. Any math majors want to give it a try?
