Sid already mentioned that Firaxis owns the rights to Colonization, and since Firaxis developed SMAC, I'm sure they'll own that too.DISCLAIMER: the author of the above written texts does not warrant or assume any legal liability or responsibility for any offence and insult; disrespect, arrogance and related forms of demeaning behaviour; discrimination based on race, gender, age, income class, body mass, living area, political voting-record, football fan-ship and musical preference; insensitivity towards material, emotional or spiritual distress; and attempted emotional or financial black-mailing, skirt-chasing or death-threats perceived by the reader of the said written texts.

SMAC 2. I don't want to see Civ5 before 2010 anyway. Preferrably even later. A break is needed to make a good sequel.
The problem with SMAC 2 would be that it would need, I don't know, a team of a dozen Sorens working on the AI to match the complexity of the game...Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

Actually, not necessarily. I was jumbling the trademark together with the copyright, but I guess either can be owned separatly by different entities.DISCLAIMER: the author of the above written texts does not warrant or assume any legal liability or responsibility for any offence and insult; disrespect, arrogance and related forms of demeaning behaviour; discrimination based on race, gender, age, income class, body mass, living area, political voting-record, football fan-ship and musical preference; insensitivity towards material, emotional or spiritual distress; and attempted emotional or financial black-mailing, skirt-chasing or death-threats perceived by the reader of the said written texts.

No, Firaxis could own the rights to the game, but EA could own the rights the "Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri" brandname.DISCLAIMER: the author of the above written texts does not warrant or assume any legal liability or responsibility for any offence and insult; disrespect, arrogance and related forms of demeaning behaviour; discrimination based on race, gender, age, income class, body mass, living area, political voting-record, football fan-ship and musical preference; insensitivity towards material, emotional or spiritual distress; and attempted emotional or financial black-mailing, skirt-chasing or death-threats perceived by the reader of the said written texts.

This is what I posted in the C4AC Legal Updates thread:

I decided to pull out the old manuals and see what they had to say about this. On page 247 of the SMAC Manual it says the following:
This manual and the software described in this manual are copyrighted. All rights reserved. No part of this manual or the described software may be copied, reproduced, translated, or reduced to any electronic medium or machine-readable form without the prior written consent of Electronic Arts.
It says essentially the same thing on page 53 in the SMAX manual.
