Sid already mentioned that Firaxis owns the rights to Colonization, and since Firaxis developed SMAC, I'm sure they'll own that too.

Firaxis might own the rights to Colonization, but I´m pretty sure that EA owns the right to SMAC.

SMAC 2. I don't want to see Civ5 before 2010 anyway. Preferrably even later. A break is needed to make a good sequel.

The problem with SMAC 2 would be that it would need, I don't know, a team of a dozen Sorens working on the AI to match the complexity of the game...

The Credits say the copyright is by Firaxis.

They must´ve sold it after the release. According to Firaxis legal department EA own the rights to SMAC. http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...hreadid=144890

Actually, not necessarily. I was jumbling the trademark together with the copyright, but I guess either can be owned separatly by different entities.

Isn't there some thread in the CivIV SMAC Mod forum where they are talking to EA to be allowed to make the mod or something?

If my memory is correct, then that would mean EA owns the rights to the game, right?
This space is empty... or is it?

No, Firaxis could own the rights to the game, but EA could own the rights the "Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri" brandname.

This is what I posted in the C4AC Legal Updates thread:

Anyways, back to topic: I voted for SMAC2 in the poll.

My vote is colonization as it's the best of them all.

I've always been a little negative to that all cities build everything - in Col you had to specialize your cities. So a good remake is wanted

Balance issues and bugs will always be discovered after release. Therefore, all a 'no patches' idea does is prevent them from being addressed.

A game without patches is like a politician with a soul, ie a very rare creature indeed...
