Call To Power 2 Cradle 3+ mod in progress: https://apolyton.net/forum/other-games/call-to-power-2/ctp2-creation/9437883-making-cradle-3-fully-compatible-with-the-apolyton-edition
I have to say that Colonization would be my choice. With modern graphics, more resource options and an overhaul of the interface, it could be spectacular. Throw in some "light" government choices (probably based on the percentage of the Sons of Liberty and the influence of the Church) which affect immigration, rehabilitation of petty criminals/indentured servants, relations with the Europeans and Indians. Add some military units (skirmishers, bushwackers) and update the combat system.
The Colony view screen could be awesome and with modern graphics it would be much easier to work out what to do with your land. A good GOTO command dialogue box would also be helpful (as it would in Civ4) so that you can get your specialists to the right place. Something I've always found tricky to manage.
My kids and I play Colonization even today, though we're running out of machines on which it will run. I'd love a SMAC update as well, though for the most part the game was so good, all it would need would be to update the graphics/interface and switch to the Civ4 combat system. Maybe a few more types of local fauna as well. Can you imagine the terraforming effects with the Pirates! engine?
Indeed, a rumor is all it is. I'm sorry, I forget where I heard it first, however.
(Also wasn't there an April Fool's joke about it last year, or the year before? I think there was some sort of more reliable source of the rumor after that, however. Though I might be confusing things. )

One possible source of the rumor is this entry from an Ask Sid column:
Question: Now i'm sure this has been asked so many times and if so then i am sorry for the repetition, but since Pirates underwent a successful update and relaunch, are there any chance we might see the same happen to Colonization, i'm sure this would be hugely successful and very eagerly received in a genre that has been lacking for years.
Sid: Hi Jason! You're right…that question is asked of us quite a bit and it certainly motivates us to consider the possibilities. Firaxis owns the rights to Colonization, so it's definitely something we're considering for future development. We'll keep you posted!
However, Sid's reply has to be taken with a grain of salt, since he gave similar answers in other columns when asked about updates to SMAC and Railroad Tycoon.

I know nothing about that
I voted for other, as I would prefer to see an XP or two to Civ4... it's way too early to talk about Civ V, just look at all the possibilities there soon will be with Civ IV... modding
As a second I would like to see Col2, even though I've only played the first Col game shortly (never got very far in a game)
Btw, who stole the banana option
I hereby declare this poll void
SMAC 2 (surprising choice, isn't it?) but I am too afraid they would screw it up. But if it was moddable,
