But when you play a game, WorldCommunityGrid stops using the cycles, because you are playing. The applet takes lowest priority.

    • got a strange mail this morning
Regarding your World Community Grid agent with Device ID 53411 as shown on the Preferences window of the agent

Your World Community Grid agent has been identified as one to which we have sent a very unusual gene sequence to process for which the Rosetta program will not be able to produce a useful result. If left as is, it will continue to attempt to process this gene sequence and reach a timeout point within about a couple of weeks. At that point, it would stop processing this gene, send whatever it has done back to the servers, credit your agent with points, and get new work. However, in this particular case, unlike others where the Rosetta program sometimes pauses its progress for hours, we know that it will not be providing us with any useful information. Thus, we would like to give you the opportunity to have your machine work on a different work unit, which will be doing more useful processing in the next weeks.

There is a small chance that your agent has already gone on to a new work unit. Here is how you can tell if it has. If the progress shows 0%, and the agent has been actively running for at least an 10 minutes, and if you leave and reenter the graphics screen, and after 2 minutes it still does NOT show a molecule, then you have one of the two gene sequences which cause this problem in Rosetta. Otherwise, your agent is working normally and you can disregard this email.

If you do have the above conditions, here is how you can stop the work unit early and have the agent download a new work unit, which will let your machine do more useful processing. However, unfortunately the vendor software is written such that it will not credit you with any points for the work done so far on this problem gene. We are very sorry about the lost points.

Sounds like a good slogan for 'Poly.

Every bit helps. How do you know that the packets you processed won't be the ones that cure cancer?

Never thought about that, did ya?

                    • This thread really belongs in the OT. We would probably get more members to join, and we could discuss it without getting +1's which would probably make for a livelier discussion.

                          • Ah yes, the joyous days of everyone expressing multiple opinions on tiny forum issues no one really cared about.

                            They truly were the days.

Nowadays many real topics don't get much attention.

There was also a thread in the OT when I started this one.

                              • BTW, I need a bit of help. I wanted to install WCGrid on my parent's computer, but they use the Windows Firewall. I tried to configure the firewall so that WCGrid can connect, but to no avail. As I don't wish to disable their firewall, I ended up uninstalling WCGrid (couldn't upload the results, while my laptop could do it using the same shared connection).

Does anybody know precisely how to adjust the firewall's settings to correctly upload WCGrid's results?
