  • There's an unexpected benefit I've found too. Previously my laptop would enter some kind of sleep mode when left on while I was sleeping or AFK, and a times would refuse to unfreeze. Since this runs all the time I leave my comp for a few minutes, it never seems to hang. :b

    • Oh, and I like how it tells me that my laptop is better than a high-end desktop too, even if it IS lying mercilessly.

      • The problem is in the middle of summer it tends to warm the room up quite significantly while running, so I've had to turn mine off temporarily until it gets cooler again.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

        • I'm over the 100K point mark now.

What if you could support causes you care about while reading this post? Your device’s unused computing power can help scientists tackle some of the world’s biggest problems: from finding better #HIV and #cancer treatments to more efficient sources of renewable energy? I just joined World Community Grid to help – join me!

          • Okay..signed up. 1 Lap Top @2.66Ghz working. This weekend I will add 3 desktops. 1 @ 1.6Ghz, 1 @2.53Ghz, and 1 @3.2Ghz.

Seems like a good idea for a good cause and no problems reported bt the 'Poly team. I'm in.

If I can get it set up at work, I may be able to have another 10 CPU's running this by Tuesday or Wednesday. We have a dedicated T1 line and only about 35 computers using it...who will ever notice?

            • It sounds good.

There's a huge push at work now to get everyone to install this (there's large posters for it everywhere). Considering almost everyone has a 2.8GHz+ computer, with 2500 people, that's a lot of horsepower.

              • Did the scientists estimate how much power they still need to complete their research?

                • Not that I know of. It would be hard to do, because the results are complex and unpredictable.

Once this project is complete, they're going to start another one (which is not yet announced). The theme is ones that help humanity, and includes things like potential vaccinations for things such as HIV.

The previous major project was done under the United Devices banner:
Accelerating the Discovery of a Smallpox Cure
The United Devices Smallpox Research Grid Project, sponsored by IBM in conjunction with Oxford University, employed computational chemistry on a massive distributed computing grid to analyze candidates for a medical therapy to fight the smallpox virus.

Combining computer-based screening with grid technology, the project allowed scientists to screen 35 million potential drug molecules against several smallpox proteins to identify good candidates for developing into smallpox treatments.

                  Small Pox
Drug Discovery Timeline Reduced from Years to Weeks
One of the largest computational projects ever undertaken, the Smallpox Research Grid Project shaved years off the time required to perform screening of this scale.

In the first 72 hours, 100,000 results were returned. Overall, the project identified 44 strong treatment candidates, which were handed to the U.S. Department of Defense for further evaluation.

Based on the success of the Smallpox study, World Community Grid was created with the goal of creating a technical environment where other humanitarian research could be processed.

                    • After only 6 days I have moved into 22nd out of 35 on the Apolyton team. ???? Seems like that is a bit odd. I am also tied for 10th in results returned? Doesn't seem to make sense to me.

                        • Today's update just came in. In results returned, I am right under/behind Boris Godunov.

(A position I can assure you I never thought I would find myself in. )

                            • Points are what matters, not results. Points tell us how much computation was actually done.

And I'm happy there's some serious competition now. I'm stuck to just 2 PCs, so you'll overtake me at some point.
