Then you'd be making a mistake.
Even with no OL, Romo was number 10 in passer rating last year. He was ahead of both Flacco and Eli Manning, as well as Rivers Newton, Dalton and way past Cutler who was number 20.
He had more attempts, completions and yardage than anyone besides Brees and Stafford (Romo had a better rating than Stafford). He had to throw the ball, the running game sucked.
He had to try and win games by scores of like 52-49. Why not blame Ware (solely, since he's the defensive leader) for the problem?

There is truth to snoopy's statement that Romo's biggest failures -- usually turnovers at critical late-game moments -- have been in the national spotlight.
But aren't those situations exactly when a franchise QB should be excelling?

More likely they're a small sample size, against some of the better teams in the league, where it's not a shock that he might have done somewhat worse than average. Sure, it would be nice if he'd do better; that's why he is top 10, not top 5.

The main reason for the new contract was to free up money this year.

He was due 16.5M this year before the contract, 11.5M after it.

5 million to spend is a lot better than 12,500.

Before the Romo deal was completed, the team picked up veterans at safety (Will Allen) and linebacker (Justin Durant) solving some of their offseason goals.
With a little more than $5 million in cap space that will increase to $7 million in June, due to the release of Marcus Spears, should the Cowboys sign a veteran running back?

Ahmad Bradshaw, who was released by the New York Giants, is available but most likely isn't trying to become someone's backup.

More realistic names are: Felix Jones, Cedric Benson, Kevin Smith and LaRod Stephens-Howling.

Thanks to the Tony Romo deal, the Cowboys gained $5 million in salary cap space. Before the Romo deal was completed, the team picked up veterans at safety (Will Allen) and linebacker (Justin Durant), solving some of their offseason goals.

I still think they have too much money wrapped up in Doug Free and Anthony Spencer.

Cutting Doug Free does not help since he has about $10M in dead money. So renegotiating his contract is the only hope and that will not be easy as they gave him a good one already.

I am not sure I would be giving $10M to Anthony Spencer as DeMarcus Ware is the bigger play maker. I just don't think you can afford to spend ~1/6 of the cap on Outside linebackers. We need a solid $3-4M player on the other side at the most. I'm not saying AS is bad, just seems like a team needs more balance than that.

                      • I know he's over the hill, but, really... this is what happens when a team gets a QB on a bargain basement deal. I imagine the Colts will be not dissimilar in a few years.

                        • Colts have done some mad/bad spending on marginal FAs this year, but it should at least upgrade their defense. With Luck just entering his second year, the arrow is definitely pointing upward.

SF just has an embarrassment of riches -- cap space, draft picks, and a deep, strong roster. As long as Kaepernick is not a mirage, they should be NFC favorites going into next season.

                          • With under 2 weeks to go until the draft, rumors are flying and trends seem to be developing -- like the dominance of big bodies with athletic gifts over skill position players. It's also just a bad year for QBs/RBs, and none of the WRs look like Megatron.

It's now looking like the top 3 offensive tackles could come off the board in the first 7 picks.

                            • I think as a Bears fan I really want that to happen (3 OTs come off early). I'd really hope to see the LBs fall, as that's more key to the Bears' future.

In particular, if enough LBs fall that they can trade down and pick up a 3rd rounder. They're apparently really scouting 3rd round pick range, which is odd since they don't have one... suggesting a trade down is likely (or a trade up from 4th). Either that or they are hoping to see one third round tier pick fall to mid 4.

                              • The Bears are in prime position to trade down, and there are plenty of indicators that they want to.

If the right talent falls to #20, they could snag an extra 2nd or 3rd rounder depending on how far they move down. At least according to the old (and IMHO a bit outdated with the new CBA) Jimmy Johnson Draft Value Chart...
