An Explanation Owed

First and foremost, let me state that my action had almost nothing to do with Sloww. If anything, I should thank him. I am, in fact, thrilled to see that he's back in fold and active. Yesterday's incident was a trigger, but certainly not the cause. This action has been under consideration for several days.

The Poly IDP isn't my league; it's all of ours. Ideally, any league member should be able to function as commish; the job should be fairly mechanical/procedural in nature. That wasn't happening. The simple fact is, by my own standards, I've been ineffective. Every ruling I made was challenged, and posts made in my role as a team manager were being perceived by some as commish policy statements. That's not healthy for the league.

The core reason for my decision is rooted in reality. My job and my family are my life, and it became abundantly clear that being commish of two leagues was simply too much for me this year. My business is doing very well, with a lovely stack of projects in house and two very promising new business pitches this week. In the course of tracking my time expenditures over the past week, it was no surprise to learn that Poly IDP League was eating up huge chunks of time beyond making draft picks and updating Yahoo -- time that could and should be billable hours. I like to think I have things in perspective and my priorities straight.

I have (mostly) enjoyed my role as commish, including (maybe especially) the inevitable conflicts and their (hopefully fair) resolution. I took pride in doing my job well and in making a small contribution to Apolyton. But it's just not something that that I can fit into my life right now.

It is my hope and expectation that this change will be a positive one. I apologize for taking a unilateral approach, but felt quite strongly that the last thing the league needed was another lengthy drama. For one thing, that would take even more of my time. For another, it promised more conflict. So I reached out to EPW and he graciously agreed to lend a hand. Maybe that was a bit selfish. But better to make a clean break.

I bear no ill will to anyone in our little tribe, and hope that's mutual. Let's relax and have a great season. I'm looking forward to it.

JR, I'm pleased that things are going so well for you. I think I said in my PM that I fully understood why you felt you had to make the move. If you had asked us for a confidence vote I would not have hesitated to vote yes for you to stay on as commish. Had you prompted this for a vote, I probably would have voted it down but encouraged everyone else to vote for. That I feel represents my mixed feelings.

It's a volunteer position. I do not feel you needed our permission to step down. I don't even feel you need an explanation beyond, that you wanted to step down. Explanation enough. Thank you for your service JR.
