The Oilers than offered up Colin Fraser, and the deal was done. The problem is LA just found out that Colin Fraser is injured and needs surgery (4+ months off), so they can't buy him out.

LA is furious and the NHL may reverse the trade...

    Couple of things.

One, Lombardi said publicly that he wanted Fraser for training camp and to play hockey. Was that BS, or is the buyout situation BS?

Two, the Oilers have reported through the team's radio colour man that Fraser being injured was noted on the trade documentation and the Kings agreed to take him.

I'm doubting anything is being reversed.

I'm thinking this is Lombardi's motivation.

I'm thinking the Oilers should ask the league to investigate the Kings for leaking Brule's name in a trade that was not done. I'm thinking that has to be some sort of interference or tampering.

How do we know who leaked it?

Given history and current optics, Edmonton is the one in danger of being investigated. Apparently Edmonton never told LA about Fraser's major injury.

All of the info about this has been coming from LA media, and much of it is being reported as 'the Kings say this, the King's say that.' That does not sound like a leak from Edmonton.

And I'll point out again, a man who works for the Oilers relayed information from management that Fraser being injured is on the trade documents and LA accepted it.

I haven't seen anything that you've reported on any reputable sources. It may well be true, but I wouldn't trust the "Oilers' colour man" to tell me the name of the player carrying the puck, let alone details like this.

In fact, reports seem to specifically say something very different.

Colin Fraser's injury means Kings will rework Ryan Smyth trade
            June 30, 2011 | 11:41 am

Forward Colin Fraser, acquired by the Kings last week in the once-reconfigured trade that sent Ryan Smyth back to the Edmonton Oilers, was found to have an unhealed fracture in his ankle and a cyst that will require surgery. Since he won't be able to start the season, the teams will discuss alternative or additional compensation for the Kings.

The original trade was supposed to send Smyth -- who requested a move for family reasons -- to Edmonton for forward Gilbert Brule. The Kings then planned to waive Brule or buy him out.

Brule, however, was not procedurally cleared to play after suffering two concussions last season. The Kings instead accepted Fraser and said he would compete for a job in training camp.

After agreeing to take Fraser and viewing his medical information, the Kings sent him to see their own medical personnel, who found that a fracture Fraser suffered last season had not completely healed. Tests also found the cyst, which endangers the stability of his ankle. He’s expected to need four months to recover. During that time, he can’t be traded or bought out.

The deal won’t be voided because the Kings don’t want to take Smyth back after he asked to be traded. General Manager Dean Lombardi said Thursday he was “trying to work it out” rather than void the deal or file a protest with the NHL.

It’s always something. … And the NHL’s free agency period begins Friday, with restricted free agent defenseman Drew Doughty still unsigned. It’s possible he will receive an offer sheet from another team, but the Kings would match it.

Suit yourself, but I'm failing to see a distinction between media hacks in different markets.

Both are relaying information provided to them by sources in the management of their respective teams. Both are credible.

It is a he said/she said at this point in time. Only, the Oilers have relayed a fact. The information about Fraser's injury is or is not on the trade documents.

If it was actually a fact, I'd wonder why they went through an intermediary. Now you've got some hapless colour guy who exists to pump the team's tires saying "a source told me".

                  That report contains bull****.

Injured players can indeed be traded.

Even the Oilers beat reporters are suggesting that the cyst was found by LA.

It could very well be that the Oilers documented the bone healing "injury", which was expected to be healed up by the start of the season, but they didn't know about or didn't mention the cyst. That wouldn't make the Oilers colour man a liar, just misleading and vague.

Bob Stauffer is/was a media guy. He is a very credible source for information about the Oilers. He left his radio show and column a couple of years ago to work for the Oilers as their radio colour guy.

Things you may recall about Stauffer: he was the one who broke the Oilers deal with Nylander a couple of July 1st's ago. He was the interviewer who got Kevin Lowe to blow up re Brian Burke.

He was saying, several weeks ago, imagine if the Oilers traded Brule to LA for Smyth and then the Kings could buy out Brule.

His year end physical was mid April.

I'd bet the cyst formed since his last x-rays, or that he hasn't had any since the break until now.

Stauffer also reports that the trade contract specified Colin Fraser would be traded "as is".

Usually, when an injured player is traded the receiving team specifies a subject to passing a physical. I would guess that LA did not do that.
