The school's stadium wasn't designed to host a game this late in the year, and potential problems range from a rock-hard field that could be unsafe for players to frozen water pipes.

Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb has been benched and Rex Grossman will start this Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, according to team sources.

Players are upset by the move, as I reported all week they would be, if the benching occurred.

Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is using McNabb as a scapegoat, according to multiple Redskins players. The coordinator's credibility has been questioned by players and members of the staff, according to team and league sources.

"The guys are extremely pissed," one Redskins player told me.

Grossman played for Kyle Shanahan last year in Houston. Mike Shanahan's son had been seen as a fast-tracked head coaching prospect in many circles, but staunch failures by the Redskins' offense this season have set that back.

Mike Shanahan was evasive when asked Wednesday if McNabb would start against Dallas, saying that he was "not committing to tell you who the starters are at any position."

McNabb didn't appreciate that he hadn't yet been told whether he was playing.

"I would have hoped," McNabb said Wednesday. "That's professionalism. Communication."

The situation reinforces McNabb's uncertain status in Washington. He signed an extension Nov. 15, but there is a clause allowing Washington to cut ties with him after 2010.

McNabb has thrown for 3,377 yards with 14 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 13 starts this season, his first with the team.

Grossman has appeared in one game this season, replacing McNabb late in the Redskins' 37-25 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week.

McNabb was unhappy about the switch in the Lions game, Mike Shanahan couldn't come up with a clear explanation for the decision, and Kyle Shanahan and McNabb were at odds over whether or not the quarterback had been tipped off in advance about the possible switch.

McNabb will be benched for the rest of the season; he's second-string for the Dallas game and will be third-string (for the first time in his NFL career) the last two games, with John Beck being the #2 QB.

"I also told him," Shanahan said, "that I cannot guarantee him that he will be back next year."

"I've got to find where Rex Grossman is, where John Beck is. I want a chance to evaluate these guys," Shanahan said. "I told Donovan that there's nothing he could do in the three games that would influence me over what he's done over the last 13 games. I said, 'I'm not sure what I'm going to do in the college draft, if we're able to get the top quarterback in the draft, if there was a young Donovan McNabb or maybe a Sam Bradford, someone like that.' There's a lot of possibilities."

Shanahan wants to evaluate Rex Grossman and John Beck? Umm... why?

I think Shanahan is only doing it to screw with Ryan Torain owners in the fantasy playoffs!

Bad enough he always switches up his RB's, now when he finally has a clear undisputed guy who should be getting all the carries, he wants to make Rex Grossman the QB so defenses can put 8 in the box because no one will be worried about what Rex Grossman or John Beck can do in the passing game.

haha Andy Reid makes some questionable decisions. 23 seconds left at the half and 1 timeout from inside their own 20 yard line and he calls 2 pass plays... the first one, Vick nearly gets sacked but picks up two yards. They line up and throw another pass (what? Are they trying to score with 80 yards to go and mere seconds with only 1 timeout?), Vick hits Maclin across the middle for 12 yards (again! Why even call that play! Won't be able to get out of bounds nor is it putting you any closer to field goal range) but Maclin fumbles and the Giants run it back 22 yards putting them in position for a quick and easy TD pass to Hakeem Nicks with 5 seconds to go in the half.

Way to turn around the momentum from the Eagles holding the Giants to a field goal mere seconds before.
