  • A team can sweep a crap division, go .500 in its other games and enter the playoffs 11-5. Doesn't mean they're good.

I don't see anything wrong with Seattle getting a home game. Whoever plays them -- defending champ New Orleans Saints iirc -- must be licking their chops.

    • Hey, six wins for the Lions. And some road wins. And a winning streak to close the year.
They don't even draft in the top 10! When's the last time that happened?

Disagree; Should KC or Indy go to Baltimore or NYC because the two AFC wild cards have better records?

        • The Lions probably couldn't afford to draft in the top 10 again. And not for a long while to come.

If you're seeding by record, then yeah.

Well, I don't think you can just say that only the worst division winner doesn't get a home game. To be fair, you have to seed all the teams. I don't have a problem with two division winners in a conference having to go on the road, if their overall records for that season don't match up to the wild card teams.

                • The Seahawks aren’t even as good as their weak 7-9 record, by some reckonings. How do they stack up against other sports’ weakest playoff teams?

Nate Silver argues that the Seahawks are not just the worst playoff team ever, but one of the worst teams in the NFL this year (contrary to their playoff 7-9 record)

The kicker is based on Jeff Sagarin's analysis:

Okay, let’s pile on: I don’t think I have a trip to Seattle planned any time soon. According to Mr. Sagarin’s formula, the Seahawks would deserve to be favored by just 3 points against the 2008 Detroit Lions, who went 0-16.

Why not keep it simple? You win your division, you get a home game. In a parity-based league, this is eminently fair. The current season's NFC West is clearly an outlier, and everyone has to live with it. Given the fact that Seattle sucks, it shouldn't make a difference.

Because the teams do not play balanced schedules, you'd have to get into all kinds of seeding formulas, which would just create more arguments. How do you account for playing a good team on short rest, or without their star player? Example: the Bears probably set a record for seeing backup QBs this year.

                    Leave well enough alone.

I don't see why. Your schedule is your schedule, your record is your record. Ties go to the division winner, otherwise superior record gets the home game. Maybe two conference division winners will go on the road, maybe none.

Edit: I suppose it's possible that three division winners could have a worse record that a wild card. But why shouldn't better records get home field? If Seattle wins, they could possibly host another game. I think that makes less sense than seeding by record.

                      • Wow really... The Giants and Bucs each have 3 more wins than Seattle. THREE! Nevermind that the Giants had a much tougher schedule and even demolished the Seahawks the last time these teams met.

You're talking about home field advantage and crap; Seattle shouldn't even be in the playoffs.

I have no problem with an 8-8 team making it but a 10-6 team not; the issue is when one team is sub-.500.

The Seahawks' non-divisional wins came against the Chargers, Panthers (), and Bears. 3 wins outside of their crappy division and they played the self-destructive Chargers and Bears and the worst team in the NFL.

Check the statistics on the Seahawks. Look where they stand in the NFL in every category (Scoring, yardage, yardage against, yards per play, etc.). This is no joke a ****ty team.

Anyone watch last night's game? Excepting for the fluky first drive of the game, I was getting sick in my stomach watching the equivalent of a bum fight.

You want to change the entire rule set for one anomalous season.

                              • No just add a corollary to the rules in the case of a division winner having a losing season. Small and simple change that will only be in effect in the rare circumstance that this happens again. Playoff OT rules were changed so quickly after last season; maybe the competition committee is no longer dragging their feet on things.

                                Anyway, check this out:
