I have no idea how Billy Volek never got himself a starting gig anywhere. That year when he played for an injured McNair, he was dominant for quite a few games.

Drew Bennett never was able to capitalize off that season, either. Strange.

Here's the thing. You had a hidden bargain on your hands. You had a pro bowl QB and future franchise Quarterback already signed for a pittance.

You throw him out to the wolves and he flounders. Your response is to cut him and move on, and then DRAFT ANOTHER QB?!

Bears management at it's finest. He was unconventional. If Marino had the misfortune of playing for the bears, he would have been out of the league in two years.

Here's the thing: the Bears had just won a Super Bowl. And Jim McMahon was the starter for the foreseeable future (drafted in 82).

The Bears had already lost Buddy Ryan in '86. Team unity was a huge and understandable concern. They were not ever going to keep a physically challenged 4th QB around who had polarized their locker room, coaching staff and fan base -- and played horribly in an upset playoff loss. (Yes, even with Flutie starting, the Bears were heavy favorites in that game.)

Every team in the NFL had a shot at him, but it was the Bears who gave Doug Flutie a chance. They weren't looking for a starting QB; they had a proven super Bowl winner in that role. I can assure you, not one person in the Bears organization regrets trading Doug Flutie during the strike in 1987.

Jim Harbaugh (who did make the Pro Bowl and was comeback Player of the Year in the 95 season) was drafted to replace Fuller and augment Tomczak.
