    • This could be your last chance, Notre Dame...

Seems like the movement for Big Ten expansion has received a boost, at least according to Wisconsin athletics director Barry Alvarez.

The AD and former Badgers football coach told Wisconsin's athletic board today that he expects the Big Ten to increase its push to add a 12th member. The Big Ten hasn't expanded since adding Penn State, which began competing as a league member in football in 1993.

"I have a sense [Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany] is going to take this year to really be more aggressive about it," Alvarez told the board. "I just think everybody feels [expansion] is the direction to go, coaches and administrators."

Slow news day in the Big Ten, isn't it?Seems like the movement for Big Ten expansion has received a boost, at least according to Wisconsin athletics director Barry Alvarez.

      • After thinking about it some, maybe you're right that there is no way for the Big Ten to crack the New York market other than ND. Given this, probably West Virginia would be the best candidate. The state is small, but support for the football program is strong, unlike, say, Rutgers. Nobody cares about Rutgers football. WVU would have to work out a game with their rivals Pitt, however. Another option is Syracuse, which, notwithstanding its performance of late, has a good football history and tradition.

The last time this question came up seriously, ND was about to join the Big Ten. But they ended up nixing the idea because they took a look at the list of schools in the Big Ten and found that there are no schools similar to them. They would always be outvoted by the big state schools that had big state school interests in mind. So they joined the Big East in all sports that the Big East offered, other than football. The schools in the Big East have a lot in common with ND in sports other than football and have a good mechanism for opting out on football. Nothing has changed since then.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

        • Suh was robbed.

Still, congrats to Guy on a Michigander winning the Heisman.

          • I thought Suh should have won as well. But since he didn't have the exposure that a school like ND would have provided him, he had no chance.

When's the last time Notre Dame even had a Heisman winner? 1987?

              edit:

2009 Heisman Trophy, Final Order of Finish, with total points

              4. Ndamukong Suh, 815 points

              10. Golden Tate, 21 points

If only Suh had gone to Notre Dame!

              • Tate didn't deserve the Heisman and it's amazing that he got any votes at all. Suh did deserve the Heisman.

How many times was Suh on national TV?

                  • Suh had little, if any chance. Be a realist. If McCoy wasn't going to win, I'm fine with Ingram.
McCoy won everything else he was eligible for, and Tebow got nada. He'll be a serviceable RB for the NFL.

                        • All big Big 12 games are televised here. Just because they were on ABC in our area doesn't mean they were shown anywhere else.

                            • Not all of the Nebraska games reached 100% of the country, but any game on ABC or ESPN is better than a game on NBC, a network no one associates with college football.

                              • OK, so you reach about 75% of the population on those nights. Better than I expected, I must admit.

NBC must reach to about 90%. Not quite PBS coverage, but close.
