  • none of my teams have got 120 yet

at least I got 6 birdies on the back nine at Sycamore Ridge while my teams sucked

    • And at least you didn't fall off a cliff. That has to be a positive.

      • I really need this week, seeing as week 5 is the bye for the chargers.

        • I'm at 108 with Driver, Lee and Weddle left. My projected total is somewhere around 25 points for those 3 so I probably won't hit 140 this week.

          • Ben, you are definitely the definition of putting all your eggs in one basket. It worked tremendously against me (something like 45 or 50 points in the 4th quarter of that Monday Night game) But a Charger bye week really kills you. If you lose this week I think you are looking at 2-3.

            • It's only one week, and Ben will have his Bolt-y core together for the other Bye weeks. Most of us don't go that route, but it's a valid approach. We shall see.

                Lessee.

                Chargers vs. Miami
                Chargers vs Baltimore
                Chargers vs Pittsburgh.

                Plus the bye.

I knew this would be brutal coming out of the gate and I was delighted to go 2-0. The Chargers do still have to play the Giants, but other than that, this is the last difficult game from now until the playoffs.

If I win despite playing the steelers, this is bonus.

                • The fallacy, of course, is believing that if the Chargers win, you will win. Last week, the Saints won big, but Brees had about 14 points IIRC. His fantasy owners, by and large, got trounced. Conversely, losing teams can rack up big passing yards, trying to come from behind.

I like a good QB-receiver duo, but my general philosophy is to diversify. With five offensive players out of seven (plus his kicker) from one team, it's asking a lot for all of them to have a good fantasy numbers week after week. IMHO.

Ultimately, though, I think Ben's biggest challenge will be quality depth, as indicated by LT's absence. We shall see.

                  • Well, thanks to the Rivers-Gates connection our matchup is actually close... we both have a FF coming, so the game will come down to 25 points versus Aaron Rodgers, and a pair of defenders (one on each team). I like my chances, but this is a lot closer than I'd hoped it would be (especially after that first half)...

                    • Projections are a complete and utter tossup. Hell of a match. Best wishes either way. I hope I can pull out a win here.

The problem isn't depth. I can get depth just fine. The problem is quality.

One of the reasons why Jag is winning is because he's managed to overcome all the deficits at his draft position, while retaining the advantages. His number one handicap was that he had the 13th pick in the draft. He managed to parley this pick into the number 5. That coupled with the opening pick of the second round, is enough to make his team dominant.

Me, I have had a scratch at RB. LT is running well, I am not worried about him, but fantasy-wise I have had to go 4 weeks without him as a quality starter. That's as if any of you were to lose your number one pick.

                      • Losing a number 1 is pretty hurtful.

                        • I totally don't believe that there's any such thing as a bad draft position. I've won leagues drafting early, late and in the middle. It just doesn't matter that much. It's all about optimizing your team from the slot you draw.

I do think it's tougher in a big league like this. Drafting early or late, you have to watch 24 or 26 guys disappear before you get your next pair. A lot of talent drops off the board. But most of those guys are totally predictable, especially in the first few rounds. That's why my personal preference is to draft late.

                          • But losing your number 1, at whatever position you drafted, hurts.

                            • Sure. That's why you need quality depth.

There are plenty of teams whose first rounders are sucking wind so far. Brady has been average. Steven Jackson hasn't scored. Slaton sucked until today. Portis has been weak. LT has been hurt. Gore is down. That's nearly half the league.

I would say that what hurts most is to lose your starting QB to injury, especially in a 14-deep league like this. There are a lot more RBs and WRs in general, and more "outta nowhere" guys you can pick up along the way to fill in. Thus, available depth.

Whew, even though half my players had a bye week and I started an injured, non-playing running back I still had a pretty darn good week.
