So I'm looking through all the new picks since I last did that chart so I can update it. The rankings at ESPN are flexible, so they update as things change. I'm not about to go back through all the old ranks and make adjustments, but as I'm adding new people I do notice a few updated numbers and make some changes. Pretty much all of these lower ranked players I'm looking at have gone up by one. I figure, "damn, I bet someone dropped quite a ways."

Then I found out who. Ervin Santana. Apparently he is now on the DL and may be sitting out the first month or so of the season. Ugh. So as far as ESPN's rankings go, he dropped from 70 to 146. Ick. I would have been at -40 otherwise.

Of course, ADP doesn't necessarily mean that you would have drafted them at that position. For example, while I think snoopy did reasonably well to get Hunter Pence at this round... I'm not sure I would have taken him (I actually thought about it), and never would have taken him where he was scheduled to be in ADP.

I don't know where y'all get your rankings. I've been using Yahoo Edit Pre-Draft Player Rankings.

Do realize that we're not using particularly standard setups, so ADP is interesting but not really reflective of drafting strategy; particularly, it would potentially indicate that a manager is drafting players more suited to a league with Wins and AVG etc., rather than QS and OBP/SLG.

That said, Imran's certainly not doing that.

ADP is useful, but not a be all, end all. That's not even accounting for variations for player performance during the year (which are substantial). It's a good looking glass for how the masses seem to rate players. It is, I'd say, rare to see the manager who alters their draft rankings all that much based on changes in the catagories measures. Usually people pick the "best player", regardless of AVG or OBP is measured (even when that can sometimes lead to silliness).

When I started I relied exclusively on the Yahoo provided stats from 2008. But of course I had no way of knowing whether 2008 was an unusual year for that player. Now I'm getting my 08 stats from Yahoo, and taking the top players indicated by those stats and then looking up the projected stats from ESPN. I certainly look at ESPN's rank, but I pay more attention to the projected 2009 stats. Not all our categories are listed there, but I can figure out most of them. (like it doesn't list Hits, but I just get that by AVG times AB).

Then I decide based on those projected numbers and 08's numbers, and whatever else makes sense to me.

It has definitely been an interesting process. When I was first considering joining I was worried about whether this would take up a lot of time... now I'm drafting for two teams and figuring out all sorts of other stats on the side. *sigh*

I usually look the other way around; look at the top 20 or so players in the position(s) I'm interested on ESPN and then see how they fall on Yahoo's 2008 rankings (though mostly I just look at the ESPN details and figure it out for myself in terms of what stats are interesting).
