Sorry, but you made your predictions after the first matches in group A and B had already been played, so unfortunately I can't give you any points for the winners there (for group A especially you had the rather huge advantage of knowing the Czechs had lost their supreme form from the qualifiers, the Swiss were a disappointment and Turkey was better than expected). For C and D your predictions will count though.

In American sports terms, the groups of the European and World Championships are akin to divisions in the major American sports, and the group phase is like the 'regular season' (except that the compositions of the 'divisions' is determined by a draw and you only play 3 games in the 'regular season', one against each team from your division). When the group phase is over we enter the 'playoffs', with the #1 and #2 of every division claiming a playoff berth but division champions getting the top seeds. Group A and B form one 'conference'/'league', group C and D another. The play-offs are a single-elimination tournament a la the NFL (so no series a la NBA/MLB/NHL), which of course ends in the European Championship Final, the European national team football version of the Super Bowl/World Series/NBA Final/Stanley Cup (except that the EC Final is held only once every 4 years).

I guess it ended up sounding a tad more complex than it seems in my head but I think most Americans should still be able to follow it

I had different expectations on still being able to join the game after those games were played. The opportunity to gain points from the first matches was already gone. Moreover, I predicted Turkey would pass on to the second round, despite their loss in first round. The Swiss were never to be expected to move on and therefore the Czechs did exactly what I had expected, win. If I had chosen Czech Republic and Portugal, you would have had a point.
