  • Bob Probert - Method Actor?

Ex-Wing Bob Probert: from grinder to movie star?

Former Red Wing Bob Probert got to rub elbows with Hollywood types while playing a small role in the Mike Myers comedy "The Love Guru" -- like Justin Timberlake and his girlfriend, Jessica Biel, and Verne Troyer, best known for playing Mini-Me in the Austin Powers movies.

"Mini-Me was a super guy," Probie told NHL.com. "He's actually from Michigan and he's a big Red Wing fan.

"He's not very tall, eh? ... He has a box he stands on and it's painted red and it's got a big Red Wing on it. When I first met him, he mentioned how he grew up watching the Red Wings and myself and he was a big fan. He was just an awesome, awesome guy."

Everybody on the set loved Probert, too, according to hockey choreographer Mark Ellis.

"Except, of course, when it came to filming the big fight scene in the movie," Ellis said. "... We just said, 'Everybody go on the ice, everybody just team up with somebody and we'll just talk about how each individual fight is going to go.'

"For some reason, nobody wanted to team up with Bob. ... So we had to draw the short straw and some young kid ended up with it."

Where's Tie Domi when you need him?

"I was supposed to make it as realistic as I could and knock his helmet off," Probert said. "Anyways, it was an uppercut and I kind of dinged him in the eye and he was sporting a shiner for the next week or so.

"He was kind of happy about it. He was like, 'Look what I got from Probie.' "

Remember, it's the thought that counts.

    • In letter, NHL threatens to kick MSG out of league

NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League is threatening to kick out Madison Square Garden, the owners of the New York Rangers, as punishment for accusing the league of violating antitrust laws.

The NHL filed court papers Wednesday that included a draft letter from commissioner Gary Bettman. In its court filing, the NHL asked a judge to agree MSG has breached its contract by challenging league rules and that it can force out MSG.

Madison Square Garden sued the NHL in September, saying it violated antitrust laws by monopolizing control of team promotions. And a judge said in November the league seemed within its rights to take control of the team's Web site.

Messages left with MSG were not immediately returned.

      Expelling MSG seems rather harsh.

      • Oh, Bettman...

MSG should just sell the team to the RIM guy.

            • Good/bad trade from which point of view?

IE, effectively the Blues traded Jamal Myers for Chris Mason and traded up some spots in the 4th->3rd round. Good overall for them, and was 'bad' bad for the Leafs?

              • For the acquiring team.

Eg, Blues got Mason for a 4th rounder (good for Blues).
Leafs got Mayers for trading a 3rd rounder in a deep draft year (bad for Leafs).

                • What I figured. I didn't get the Mayers for a 3rd rounder either... do NHL teams just really undervalue past-1st-round draft picks?? In the NFL they trade 5th round picks for quality starters at quality positions (ie, RB), and that's 5th out of 7...

                  • Where people were picked doesn't matter if they don't live up to their placement.

                    Zetterberg's what, a 7th rounder? I'd take him over most 1st rounders...

                        • Islanders and Toronto make a trade....

All we know so far is 5th pick will go to Toronto (supposedly to get Luke Schenn), and Islanders get the 7th pick now.

Islanders trade #5 to Toronto for pick #7 in this year's draft, and a conditional #60 this year and Toronto's 3rd round next year, OR #68 this year and Toronto's 2nd round in '09

                          Toronto's highest pick since 1989...

Columbus trades pick 19 this year and 3rd round pick this year (67)
to Philly for RJ Umberger & 4th year pick this year (118)

I didn't mean 'a person chosen at the fifth round' but "a 5th round pick in the upcoming draft". In the NFL, a 5th round draft pick is considered worth a (known) medium quality veteran RB, apparently.

To get a first round pick in the NFL, you'd probably have to trade a star on the level of Iginla... assuming it was a mid 1st rounder, anyway. Of course that trade would never happed due to salary cap rules, but still...

                              • I don't know much about the NFL, but 1st rounders in the NHL aren't sure things by any means. That devalues them immensely.
