  • Illini trounce Northwestern to finish 9-3, 6-2.
Third place in the Big 10, solidly in top 20 nationally.

Not bad, esp. vs. preseason predictions...
    Collegefootballpoll.com Prediction: 4-8, 1-7
ESPN prediction: 8th in Big 10

It's a crappy little conference, but dammit, it's our conference.

Knocking off Ohio State on the road: priceless.

    • I wouldn't be surprised if the Illini are the second bowl choice out of the conference, given the Illini hold a win over Ohio State, have a better overall record, will finish higher in the BCS rankings, and didn't lose to a I-AA team. Sure, the Wolverines did beat the Illini head-to-head, but that shouldn't always mean everything.

Oh, and BTW, Kansas took care of business again. Now comes the tough part. Rock Chalk Jayhawk.

            • And after a spirited comeback, it seems Oklahoma goes down! In similar situation to how Oregon went down... starting QB goes down hurt early on and the team gets upset.

West Virginia has to love this. If OU beats Kansas/Missou, they are in prime position to be #2... as long as they can beat Connecticut.

              • With Oregon going down, and Oklahoma about to, the chase for #1 and #2 has been blown wide open again.

#1 LSU remains in the driver's seat, with games remaining vs. Arkansas and the SEC championship (likely against Tennessee, though Georgia has a shot).

#3 Kansas and #5 Missouri have a neutral-site elimination game next week, and then the Big 12 championship (likely against newly-eliminated Oklahoma, though Texas now has a shot).

Now, should either LSU lose a game, or the Kansas/Mizzou winner lose the Big 12 championship, or both (God help us), the door is wide open for...

#6 West Virginia (vs. UConn and Pitt). And #7 Oh-****ing-io ****ing State (in the clubhouse at 11-1). It's not even out of the question for #8 Arizona State to sneak in (vs. USC and Arizona).

Beyond that, we're looking at current two-loss teams, with Georgia being the only one with even the hint of a prayer--they'd need Kentucky to beat Tennessee to allow the Dawgs into the SEC Championship, and then they'd need to knock off LSU. And then they'd need a lot of help, such as the Big 12 North champ losing, and probably one or maybe both of West Virginia and Arizona State losing.

                  • Not a lot of help for the WAC champ today, it still looks like the Hawai'i-Boise State winner will be right around the automatic BCS bid dividing line, could go either way. Unless Illinois makes a big unexpected jump, the Big 10 is only gonna get one berth. The Pac-10 will get two (USC-ASU winner, plus Oregon probably), Big 12 could go either way, SEC could go either way, ACC and Big East will get one and like it. There should be an empty slot for the WAC champ...

                      • Let's take a look at what we know about the conference titles.

ACC: Boston College locked up its berth in the title game with its win over Clemson. Even if they lose to Miami, they beat both Clemson & Wake (who are both in the clubhouse as far as the division is concerned), so they'd win on tiebreaker. The Virginia Tech/Virginia clash next week will determine their opponent, with the Cavaliers having the advantage right now with that game being in Charlottesville.

Big 12: The Kansas/Missouri clash in Kansas City next week will decide one representative. I like the Jayhawks in that one. Despite Oklahoma's loss, they still control their own destiny, and might not even need to do anything - Texas/Texas A&M is on Friday, and if Texas loses, Oklahoma will be in no matter what.

Big East: The conference title is on the line next week when Connecticut visits Morgantown to face West Virginia, winner take all. It's hard not to like the Mountaineers in this one but you can bet that the non-BCS conference teams will be rooting hard for the Huskies since it'll make it easier for them to earn a slot.

Big Ten: Ohio State has won the conference and is in for no worse than the Rose Bowl.

Pac-10: What a mess. The title is up for grabs between Arizona State (which controls its own destiny), Oregon (which has wins over both of its rivals, but needs help), and USC (which just won't go away). The USC/Arizona State game will give us a little more clarity but won't determine anything unless Oregon loses at UCLA. (If that happens, an Arizona State victory would secure them the title, while a USC victory would *shudders* put them in the driver's seat.)

SEC: LSU's locked up its berth in the title game regardless of what happens against Arkansas. The Tennessee/Kentucky clash will tell the tale for the other berth. Tennessee controls its destiny; with a win, it's in, but should they lose, Georgia will get the shot.

WAC: I bring this one up because it's the only shot of a non-BCS conference rep making it in. Boise State/Hawaii is a de-facto championship game; the winner gets the conference and will be the one in line for a possible shot at a BCS bowl (most likely the Sugar).

But if you want to we can, if you want to take the position that Big 12 fails to feed the NFL.
