Michigan has always been one of the elite programs, and there's no sign that will change anytime soon.
Exactly. Those people pooh-poohing Miles going to UM (mostly, but not solely, SEC homers) are discounting Michigan's amazing reputation and Miles' ties to there. Not saying he is going, but I'm sure that's quite a draw for him.

That and we know that this LSU team could easily have 4 losses right now and imagine the pressure that'd be placed on him as a result (seeing as he already has the pressure of not being Saban on him).

Two good years with a team the previous coach recruited, and now that he's into his own recruits he hasn't had much success.

Certainly it's possible he will turn this around - ND has such an amazing reputation that the recruits will come no matter what - but I think it will be with a different coaching staff under him, or at minimum a different coaching style, and a much stronger emphasis on recruiting. At some point he has to take some of the blame for this. Carr certainly deserves much of the blame for Appalachian State, after all...
You see, you just don't know the details. You're ill informed. Here is a narrative of where ND got to where it is and where it's going.

Ty didn't do much recruiting during his last two years at Notre Dame. That's much of the reason why he was fired 2 years before the customary 5 year trial period. His 2004 class was ranked #30 and he only brought 17 kids in -- this was one of the worst recruiting classes in Notre Dame history. He only had a handful of recruits for 2005 when he was fired. Charlie came in and was doing what recruiting he could while winning a Super Bowl with the Pats, but the 2005 class at signing day was ranked #27 and consisted only of 15 recruits.

When Weis came in, some kids washed out of the program. Notre Dame has never accepted junior college recruits, so it could not replenish the ranks from there. Even this year, Notre Dame stands at only 74 scholarship players. So put another way, Notre Dame imposed death penalty-type probation on itself. What other programs have been docked 11 scholarships? What other programs have earned 2 BCS bids while being docked 11 scholarships?

Weis's kids really showed up in the class of 2006 -- i.e., this year's sophomores. This year's freshmen and sophomores are getting lots and lots of playing time. They will be outstanding players, but right now, they suck. Those are just the facts with young players. Everybody in the program has been surprised by the depths of suckitude, but the young guys are players that it would be foolish to give up on.

Going forward, as is customary at ND, Weis has at least 2 more years to right the ship. The 2007 recruiting class was good. The 2008 class, despite it all, is outstanding -- #1 by a country mile. That's if Notre Dame can sign them all after this terrible season, of course. I have no doubt that Notre Dame will be pounding on folks for many years after this one.

Most of the assistant coaches will stay on. Corwin Brown, a former Michigan Man and our new Defensive Coordinator, just started this year and is proving to be an outstanding recruiter. He also is dealing fairly well with the lack of players -- the D lost 8 starters but has not suffered relative to last year. The D line coach has turned a sow's ear into a silk purse, so he will stay. The secondary coach is excellent.

The only replacements may be the Special Teams Coordinator (Polian) and O line coach (Latina). Hardly cleaning house.

        • Yes, there are other factors, such as the new QB is coming off of elbow surgery. That was handled poorly by Weis, but the situation was bad in any event.

Then you have the fact that all of Notre Dame's losses are to bowl-bound teams.

Then there are hints of a rift between a few of the Ty's guys with the main body of Charlie's guys. I can't confirm the facts on this one.

          • The recruitment argument is bull****. There are many schools with much worse recruiting rankings that have done much better than notre dame. in the past 3 years.

also that is all notre dame fans can point to at this point. "we have a #1 recruitment class coming in" doesnt change this season, nor does it change the fact that notre dame gets a lot of bias in it's favor from the polls. that 2006 BCS birth was bull****. a 2 loss notre dame that only beat one ranked team all season...gets a bcs birth? bull**** through and through.

I think that it's funny that all ND can muster is a plea to the future through recruiting. what has weiss said or done that actually proves he has the balls to change something around? I've watched 4-5 ND games this year and I havent seen anything coaching wise that proves he can change for the better.

regardless, i can't wait for OSU vs. Notre Dame next season.

Who do you have in mind, taking those 3 years results together? Remember, two BCS bids in 3 years...

they are only going to bowls because of the gimme games against ND.

these bowl games are all #3 or less bowl games

                the poinsettia bowl?
                champs sports bowl?
                insight bowl?
                motor city bowl?

the only BCS bowl bound team is BC...

                • I didn't think it needed more explanation, but ND's schedule rank is the 3rd hardest season-to-date in college football, according to Sagarin.

                  And no, OSU's nowhere close.

                    • That's strange, according to Scout's OSU recruiting rankings were #11 in 2004, #7 in 2005, and #13 in 2006. Much better than ND's. So that doesn't fit your story.

By the way, the bid wasn't the crappiest that year by far.

tough schedules still dont explain you losing to

                        michigan state
                        perdue
                        navy
                        air force

penn state and georgia tech is a maybe?

you should have lost to USC and BC.

OSU has beat 2 teams you lost to.

what more is there to explain.

It also says Washington's schedule was #1.

you should be a 4 loss team roughly. you lost to inferior teams in air force, navy, etc etc.

have any of those teams recruited better in than ND in the past 5 years?
