  • Terrible news about Blake, but at least the cancer is treatable. Prognosis sounds good for him.

    • Might help more if you provide a quote or a link Tingkai. Not sure if you are referring to Jason Blake, Rob Blake or Toe Blake, but I haven't heard anything.

      • Jason Blake has a rare but VERY treatable form of leukemia. He won't miss any games. It likely won't hurt his performance, unless it has a psychological effect.

I didn't check your link but did see the Tsn report last night. Apparently the normal treatment involves one pill a day which most people tolerate well but a significant number do have swelling and nausea. There is an even smaller number for whom the pill does not work at all and they have to look at other treatments.

          • It's hard to imagine how chemotherapy on a small dosage in 1 pill a day is not going to take something off the top of an athlete expected to put out at peak 3 times every 10 days, or more.

And then there's the mental aspect. I've seen the prospect of cancer take a lot out of strong people while they come to grips with it.

            • Chemotherapy works by targetting rapidly reproducing cells. I would think that at a minimum this would hurt his muscle growth, and blood cell production.

              • On a lighter note -- how BRUTAL is McCabe as a defenseman?

McCabe, who did score last night, seems to otherwise be in a complete fog as though he's uninterested in even trying to stand out.

He's just puzzling to watch. A defenceman that big, that strong, that skilled and that well paid ($7.15 million U.S., tops on the team) should grab your attention now and then, but when McCabe does, it's often for all the wrong reasons. Indeed, he had the locals hooting in derision in the third period when, while trying to circle around his own net with the puck with his team on the power play, he inadvertently tripped over the back of the net and sent himself sprawling to the ice.

Earlier, in the first period, he made it safely going the other way around, but mishandled the puck and then took a slashing penalty to put the Leafs a man down with only 1:45 played.

I saw the tangle with the net when it happened The play by play guys had some fun with it " How bad a night is it when the net is knocking you down?"

Leafs looked brutal last night. They are a funny team that way-- They didn't look too bad against Ottawa but then kaslam-- awful. Last year they had to be the most inconsistent team I watched.

My only regret from yesterday was that I didn't pick up TWO Hurricanes-- but I do thank Hamilton for his PPG

                    • Tonight is a huge one for almost everyone-- Both the Storm and the Folly have pretty full lineups going against each other including a head to head goalie matchup in Atlanta v Ottawa. My opponent will be in one of those conflicted situations as any points racked up by Alfredsson hurts him on the goalie side

From a look at the schedule, it appears that almost everyone has 7-8 skaters going and a couple of goalies. Should be wild

I've been eyeing one of your cast-offs, but I can't make myself drop Blake yet.

                          Is that a bad thing?

My drops from my draftees are pretty easy to understand

Bobby Ryan --seems headed for the minors-- got me a PPG in London though

Jordan Staal -- got dropped since he has been a third line centre so far and ALSO because for the next several days he plays on the same days as Briere and Lecav.(IIRC it would have been next week until I could even play him ) - Probably a good pickup for someone

Bieksa-- I do want to have Ottawa's goalies on my team and Bieksa seemed most expendable-- His point production to date has not made me regret the decision

Since I am the only person with 4 goalies on my roster (dang day to day on Emery )-- I felt I needed something extra to get my skater games.

I am curious as to which of my cast-offs it might be but only time will tell if you make the leap

If my activity triggers other to be active, I don't mind. It just means that someone might get exposed that I might want to keep and hold. So far I have been playing hunches and have found there a LOT of players with similar numbers out there. I just haven't found the players I want to stick with yet.

Perhaps my active style is all wrong for this type of league. This is my first time so perhaps its a big error. Perhaps its the hugest rookie mistake to have four goalies or to churn through players instead of selecting some good ones to stick with-- But I do enjoy playing the hunches

                          • It's perfectly fine to be active. There's no maximum trades in this league.

But beware being too active...casting off someone who may be phenomenal later is always a risk.

Early season scoring is largely not indicative of later scoring.

For instance, Langkow has many times more points than Crosby but dropping Crosby for Langkow is just stupid. an extreme case, but you get the picture.

For sure-- you may have noticed that none of my "top 8" skaters have left my roster

I may regret a drop -- in fact the fact that I go through a few players means I probably will really regret one. But c'est la vie

Well yes and no . I don't think a 3-4 game stretch early in the season is any better or worse than a 3-4 game stretch late in the season as an indicator of overall performance.

Your example is a pretty obvious one. If Crosbie were pointless and minus 10 right now, I'd guess that you could still get almost any player on the league for him in a one-for one trade

Overall its just the old chestnut that past performance may not be an indicator of future performance. You need to look at the past performance in light of all the circumstances and still you might get it wrong.
