Here's the deal. They know they're good. Too good, even.
So they think about it, and decide they'll do this and purposely lose a draft pick.
NOW, they still win, but they'll be all aloof and say that they don't even need draft picks.

Sorry, but that is a load of crap, Snoop. I would be shocked if you could come up with even ONE year where this tactic succeeded as many as 5 times. Please cite a source if you're going to talk out of your ass.

In general, the practice of freezing the kicker is mocked because IT ALMOST NEVER WORKS and is considered A WASTE OF TIME -- not because it's unfair. Au contraire, it is inherently fair. All teams play by the same rules. And I'm willing to bet there's an equal number of missed first kicks that become good kicks after the timeout.

Like freezing a free throw shooter in basketball, this is a time-honored, if slightly silly, tradition of gamesmanship. Everyone knows it's coming. No one is fooled. But it shows the team the importance of not giving up. And sometimes -- not often, I maintain, in the NFL -- it "works."

So freaking what?

Or are you saying these athletes are so fragile that they can't reliably repeat a 1.7-second operation that has a 70+% chance of success, just because someone made them wait for a minute? Poor babies. Maybe they should consider getting a gig without so much pressure.

JR, please tone it down... that tone is not appreciated, regardless of you disliking my opinion

10 is probably an exaggeration, but I am not referring to icing the kicker. That happens every single time a reasonably difficult FG is attempted at the end of a half. I am referring to certain coaches who do what the Broncos did (and Shanahan is one of the worst here), which is to call a timeout moments before the snap, so that the kicker is unaware of the timeout being taken. That causes the kick to take place, which tires out the kicker, the snapper, and the holder some, puts more stress on the kicker mentally, and for some reason seems to regularly work, much more frequently than icing the kicker (2 for 3 in my small sample size). That's why I consider it a poor thing to allow - not necessarily unfair in the sense that it can certainly happen to either team, but bad for the game in that it is an out of game tactic that impacts the play on the field.

Think of it like Civ - the catapult massing technique certainly was "fair" in that anyone can build catapults. That doesn't make it good for the game, because it took away from how the game was supposed to be played.

Like I said, ten is probably an overstatement, but I saw it twice last year (in about twenty or twenty-five games watched) and once this year out of 5 games watched, and extrapolated. Perhaps I see more than my share of them
