  • Holy crap. Total insanity in progress in the Bronx!

The White Sox pound the hell out of Clemens, scoring 8 runs in the top of the 2nd. He had nothing. Jeff Karstens eventually gets the third out.

Then Garland does his best Clemens impression, and the Yankees score 8 runs to tie the game in the bottom of the second!

    That's ridiculous.

Boston did well in the Gagne trade. Doh. That makes an already strong bullpen even stronger. The Sox didn't give up much. Lester > Gabbard, and the other two guys probably won't amount to anything (though the 17 year old is so young you never know, of course).

If Gagne turns out to be a three month rental, it's a real bad deal for the Sox.

I saw David Murphy in SD when the Sox were here - he was a three day call up between Schill going out and Gabbard coming up.

Murphy's not Ellsbury, but he's a good, solid, all-around corner outfield prospect right at the edge of being major-league ready. Manny has two years left on his contract, Drew is a big waste who isn't likely to improve, Peña is still Pain Ya, so good, solid, all-around corner outfielders are something useful for the Sox to have around.

Lester > Gabbard, but given Schill's age and Wake's age/effectiveness (plus the "loss" of Dougie when Wake hangs it up), Lester, Gabbard and Buchholz could all find room in 09, with Beckett and Matsuzaka.

Financially, three young, not-yet free agency eligible starters would be nice to have in two or three years, when you have to re-sign players like Youk, Papelbon, Okajima, etc., not to mention having Lowell to replace in a couple of years, plus Manny to figure out.

I feel soooooooooo bad for Roger Rental. How much did he make for that inning and two-thirds of "work?"

I'll defer to you as someone who has followed his progress, but that is NOT what I've read about the guy. I've seen "4th OF, maybe."

Gabbard was likely pitching over his head a bit, Michael. I'm not saying he's terrible, but the Sox are unlikely to miss him much.

And don't talk about financial concerns. The Red Sox don't really have 'em. $100 mil here, $100 mil there... pretty soon you're talking real money (Yankees money ).

            • .267/.355/.447 in AAA as a 24 year old corner OF? I don't think that makes him a solid prospect at all.

Maybe if he's a great defender, and transitions well into MLB (such that he can basically duplicate that line - or better it, since he will be hitting in Texas). But I'd call that optimistic. More likely he's a backup.

              • It's now 11-8 White Sox. Jeff Karstens is not good (never was). Neither is the White Sox bullpen, though. Come on, Yankees!

                  • Hahaha...

These Yankees/White Sox games are absurd. I don't know what's up with the weather in NY right now, but it seems like anyone who makes an effort and whose first name doesn't start with "Alex" could hit the ball out the first two games [and played for the Yanks, although the Sox just can't hit sometimes, and yesterday was one of those times].

You guys transfer Coors Field to the Bronx or something?

                    • It's been very, very hot and humid up here. Maybe that has something to do with it... but I doubt it. The first two games the Yankee pitchers did pretty well. I think the pitchers who gave up all those runs just sucked.

                      • Sushi joint takes dig at Bonds

By COLLEEN SLEVIN Associated Press Writer
Article Launched: 08/02/2007 12:20:58 PM PDT

DENVER—As Barry Bonds pushes for home run No. 755 to tie one of baseball's most hallowed records, a Colorado sushi restaurant is celebrating the man who set the record—Hank Aaron.

Hapa Sushi Grill ran a half-page ad Thursday in the satirical weekly The Onion that read "Congratulations Hank Aaron on 755 home runs." At the bottom of the page, the ad ontinues: "Organic beef and chicken, no added steroids." Full-page ads are planned for two Boulder, Colo., daily newspapers starting Friday.

Hapa, which has two locations in Boulder and one in Denver, previously has used skinny sumo wrestlers and flaming bags of fast-food hamburgers in its ads to promote its healthy Japanese food.

Hapa founder Mark Van Grack said the ad taps into the Bond controversy to promote his business but it also sends a message like other previous ads for the company.

"Think about what you're doing. Be healthy. You don't need steroids do something great, as Hank Aaron did," he said of the message.

Jonathan Schoenberg of TDA Advertising & Design in Boulder, who created the ad, said it's intended as a tribute to Aaron. But he acknowledged it's also a roundabout dig at Barry Bonds, who has been accused of using steroids. Bonds has long denied doping.

"It's just a reminder that people are questioning the legitimacy of his breaking this incredible record," said the 39-year-old Schoenberg, who grew up admiring Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson and Thurman Munson as a New York Yankees fan in the 1970s.

He said he got the idea about a month ago after reading Aaron didn't plan on watching Bonds tie the record.

Schoenberg said he still feels bad for Bonds, because the steroid allegations will cloud his accomplishments.

"You're so famous for something you don't want to be famous for," he said.

White Sox starting pitching has been our strength this year... our relievers lose us games that the starters have pitched well in, basically.

Certainly they might have all had bad days at the same time (and Contreras has lost a bit off his pitches lately), but I consider that highly unlikely.

                            • Eh, he'd been doing better the last few years. Either way, for our starting pitching to melt down to the tune of 8+ runs three days in a row, is a bit much to believe. (I don't remember how many the starters gave up in the first two games but if it wasn't 8 it was close.)

                              • Bonds hits 755

And on the same day, A-Rod hits his 500. Wierd since we've been waiting a while for both.
