  • You know I really think that hiring of Garrett as O-Coord and may head coach later is a smoke screen. I think Garrett will get the head coaching gig, but Jones has to interview minority candidates so he doesn't get hit with the Rooney rule. But if he just interviewed minorities, the NFL would know it was a stunt, so he's bringing in a bunch of white dudes as well.

    • I think he will interview Rivera after the SB, then make his call.

      • IRVING – The first full day of the Cowboys' coaching search began Tuesday, and Jerry Jones' focus was on the coaches he knows best.

According to several sources, Jones met with offensive assistants Tony Sparano and Todd Haley as well as secondary coach Todd Bowles as possible replacements for Bill Parcells, who resigned Monday.

            • NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports Hall of Fame QB Troy Aikman is assisting owner Jerry Jones in the Cowboys' head-coaching search.

Aikman has long been a fan of Turner, so this could have a large effect on the way Jones leans in his decision. Schefter also seconds the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's report that Turner is the frontrunner for the job.
Looks like it'll be Norv Turner in Dallas. He turned down a big extension to stay in SF as O-coord, and used to coach Garrett, the new Dallas O-coord. Plus, Aikman likes him and he has a positive history with the franchise.

                • The Cowboys will interview 49ers linebacker coach Mike Singletary for their head coaching position.

Very interesting. Adam Shefter said earlier Monday that Norv Turner had a specific defensive person he wanted to bring with him. This is entirely speculation on our part, but could Jerry Jones be getting a read on Turner's defensive pick. Singletary has experience with the 3-4 defense on the 49ers.

                    • More words...

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram indicates that Mike Singletary's interview with the Cowboys may be in reaction to "grumblings" that the team hadn't fulfilled the Rooney Rule in its head-coaching search.
The Star-Telegram's Mac Engel says the grumblings were that Todd Bowles, who interviewed as a minority candidate, was never in serious contention for the job. Engel believes Dallas is now "taking no chances."

A "league source" told the San Francisco Chronicle that the Cowboys will likely name their next head coach on Wednesday.
Mike Singletary, Norv Turner, Wade Phillips, and Gary Gibbs, whom Chris Mortensen has cautioned not to "count out," are the top candidates. Jason Garrett is in the mix, but figures to stay as offensive coordinator.

                        • Cowboys to interview Bears' Rivera

The Cowboys obtained permission Tuesday morning from the Chicago Bears to interview defensive coordinator Ron Rivera for their head coaching position.

Rivera was delayed in Chicago by snow and his plane, which was supposed to leave at 11 a.m. CT, hasn't taken off yet. Rivera was supposed to interview with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Tuesday afternoon.

The Cowboys only sought permission to interview Rivera as a potential head coach. This is the fourth head coaching position for which Rivera has interviewed this offseason, and a source close to him said he is confident he can win the job.

Norv Turner -- believed to be the front-runner to replace Bill Parcells -- first brought Rivera to Jones' attention when, during his own interview at Valley Ranch, he recommended Rivera as his defensive coordinator of choice should he become the seventh head coach in Cowboys history.

<--one mosley graf--> Sources told ESPN.com's Matt Mosley that one of the holdups to Turner becoming head coach for the Cowboys is that he doesn't think Jason Garrett is ready to be an offensive coordinator. Garrett interviewed for the head coaching position almost two weeks ago, but he's been expected to become the offensive coordinator. Jones would like for Garrett to take on some of the play-calling reponsibilities, but Turner doesn't think he's ready. Turner is a fan of Garrett's, but he may be leaning toward naming Cowboys assistant head coach/offensive line Tony Sparano the offensive coordinator and using Garrett in a different role.

Earlier in the interview process, Turner said he'd have no problem having Garrett on his staff. In fact, Turner tried getting Garrett on his staff in Oakland.

"That tells you a little something about how I feel about Jason," Turner said.

While Rivera did not rule out making a lateral move when asked during Super Bowl week, the complication in that scenario is that he remains under contract to the Bears until Feb. 20. They could therefore preclude him from making a lateral move until then, if head coach Lovie Smith and GM Jerry Angelo were so inclined.

Also, the Colts have received the paperwork from the Cowboys, requesting permission to interview Colts assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell. Permission has been granted, but there is no timetable as to when Caldwell will interview with the Cowboys.

A Colts source said that Caldwell would be unlikely to accept a position in Dallas, with Garrett already hired to lead the offensive coaching staff, because Caldwell has no experience coaching with him.

Jones has said he will not name a head coach to replace Bill Parcells until Wednesday at the earliest.
According to sources, the Cowboys obtained permission Tuesday morning from the Chicago Bears to interview defensive coordinator Ron Rivera for their head-coaching position.

I was really starting to wonder about Jones when I heard that Turner was his lead candidate. I guess that was just as much a smoke screen as the other 8 or so guys he interviewed.
