      Towards the cap?? Since when?

That's how much he has to get paid, but not how much he counts towards the cap under the CBA.

      • What are you basing that on? Everything reported and all commentary I have heard on it says you are wrong.

        • There are sources, such as the AP, which also clearly state the Oilers pay half of his salary, period:
The Edmonton Oilers claimed veteran center Petr Nedved off waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.

Because Nedved was claimed off re-entry waivers, the Oilers are only responsible for half of his $2.35 million salary. Nedved will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

          and CBC
Because Nedved was claimed off re-entry waivers, Edmonton is only on the hook for half of his salary of almost $2.4 million US.

General manager Kevin Lowe shook up the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday, claiming centre Petr Nedved off waivers from Philadelphia.

Can you link to any reputable source that backs up the $600K claim?

That makes no sense. It's a quarter of his salary that he's under contract for...

          • So how does this work?

Flyers pay his salary 100% up to today.

Flyers pay 50% of his salary for the rest of the season, Edmonton pays the other 50% of his remaining salary.

That makes sense to me. But what doesn't make sense is the cap space.

How much does he count towards the cap for Philly? How much for Edmonton? If what you're saying is true, he counts towards Philly's cap for ~$1.8M and Edmonton's for only $0.6M?

Does not compute for me. Remember that salary paid != cap space taken up. If this was the case I see virtually no reason for Philly to let others claim Nedved from waivers.

            • That's what waivers do, and that's why he was an in demand quantity now and not before (reportedly, at least the Leafs and Sens also had claims in for Nedved). The analysis I've seen so far also confirms this, and they say to expect more stuff like this and trades picking up closer to the deadline, not just because teams will have a somewhat clearer picture, but because the cap is calculated by the number of days a player is on your roster.

Here's a blog entry that explains the situation:

              • Philly had no choice. They can either let him sit in the AHL and pay his full one-way contract, or they can call him up and hope he clears waivers. He already cleared them twice this year, but not this time. You have to have a two-way contract to avoid this hassle.

Remember, there's not that many teams that care that much about salary per se, but rather cap room - especially Philly. If it was up to them, they'd gladly blow tons more on salary, so what would they care if they were on the hook for a little more cash with no impact against the cap?

So since he's on the Oilers roster for half the season, this still does not mean he counts towards their cap for half his salary?

This is utterly retarded. Logic-defying, even.

                  • That's what the re-entry waivers do. The whole point is to stop teams from shielding talent in the minors.

                    • It's a penalty for signing bad deals. It's a big part of the logic behind the salary cap. You can squirm, but bad deals are going to cost you.

                        • Habs win. I didnt see most of the game, but 5-2 seems nice.

Habs might lose some bad ones, but they've never lost more than 2 straight, and they've only done that twice. And they aren't apart of the rediculous mix in the east. I think they're good this year.

I agree they are above the fray so far this year but as a team I don't yet consider them as part of the elite

                            • Is it me, or is Vancouver the most unsportsmanlike team in the NHL?

First Bieksa whacks Lombardi with his stick while Lombardi is celebrating his 2nd goal after embarrassing Bieksa...

Then minutes later Matt Cooke takes a shot at a Flames player well after the buzzer/whistle.

The reffing of the game has, again, been atrocious. In both cases, the Flames ended up with the penalty (Ference for "instigating" a beatdown of Bieksa after his dirty play + 10 min misconduct; "Hooking" on some Flames player at the buzzer)

I can't tell -- The game is supposed to be on Sportsnet but Bell is having technical difficulties-- Tonight I am regretting my switch to satellite

On the radio it sounds like a total parade to the penalty box and the Flames have been shorthanded far far too much. Isn't Magoo one of the refs??
