Is the Edmonton media really that retarded?

    Nedved's 06-07 salary is $2,356,000.

    Half of that is $1,178,000.

It seems the media in Edmonton is too stupid to know that the $1.2M figure is half of what he makes already.

    • The Oilers are in last place in the Northwest Division and are hoping Nedved and provide a spark to their offence which is ranked 24th in total goals.

In 21 games this season, Nedved has one goal, seven points and is a minus-20. The 35-year-old, who has been playing with the AHL's Philadelphia Phantoms, was acquired by the Flyers in January from the Phoenix Coyotes and is making $2.356 million.

Since Nedved was taken off re-entry waivers, the Oilers are only accountable for half the pro-rated value of the contract this season.

To make room on the roster for Nedved, the Oilers assigned winger Patrick Thoresen to the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

      • Looking at his AHL stats from the Philly Phantoms...he's getting about 0.6 points per game in the AHL...

You seem to have made a mistake-- If his annual salary is $2.356 million and if the Oilers are only accountable for half the pro-rated value of the contract this season, then they will pay about 600,00.

          It would be 82-38/82 * .5 * 2.356= 632,097

I don't claim to know why they only pay half but if they pay him half his salary for the remainder of the season it comes to the calculated amount for the 44 games remaining. If they just pay full prorated salary that would be 1.264 million

If it is half his REMAINING salary and his annual salary is 2.356 million, they will only be on the hook for 632K. You need to take HALF the prorated amount if your source is correct

                Leadership? Doubtful.

New attitude? Eh... I dunno about that, either.

Something? Maybe. I think he might be valuable if he can click with Hemsky and Sykora, and on the PP. I can't see him bringing much to the table if they put him on a line with, say, Pisani and Torres. But you never know, I guess. Nedved has a lot of faults, but his strengths (good shot, offensive vision, nice passer) match up pretty well with some of our weaknesses.

All of this, of course, doesn't solve our need for a puck-moving defenceman. But it might be a precursor to such a trade. With one more experienced center around, putting together an attractive package for a d-man could be a little easier. But it'll still be an uphill battle.

It appears that it isn't the media in Edmonton who have the problem.

Nedved's an offensive player well past his prime. Edmonton has a HUGE abundance of underachieving forwards, your weakness is in your defense. Adding more to your salary cap for someone untradable like Nedved isn't very bright.
Have a look at Gagne's +/- this year and compare to previous years. Then think about what you've said.

The idea isn't that Nedved would be traded. The idea is that Nedved being here makes it easier to part with one or two of the younger forwards. He doesn't help the defence, he helps make other players available to get a defenceman.

If he works out, great! If not, not much lost.

                      Yup.

It also serves notice to most of the other forwards that someone is quite likely on the way out. About the only untouchable is Hemsky, and then Smyth and Stoll as unlikely. Now everyone has something to play for that might be of more immediate concern than the next contract.

Let's see how it works out.

It doesn't matter what they pay, he counts $1.2M towards the cap. That's the important part.

Your point being that Phily sucks so most of their +/- is terrible? This is true, but compare Gagne's stats to Nedved's in prior year.

Nedved is not a good defensive player, Gagne is. A funny comparison. It's fitting that Gagne actually has a lot of points, even on Philly, also...

You're sitting awfully close to the cap. Taking an over-the-hill veteran who is underperforming even on an AHL team and counting him significantly towards your cap is not much?

OK, in your world he can count for $1.2 million. In the NHL and real world, he will count for $600K and change.

Yeah, Thoreson is on the way out to the farm team at least.

Quite a brilliant strategy...rather than giving a promising player valuable NHL experience he's putting in a geriatric underperforming player instead.

As a side note...Why does Edmonton have such a hard-on for Hemsky?

It's perplexing when I watch Edmonton PPV or Sportsnet West on an Edmonton game where the colour guy gets all warm and fuzzy talking about how "electric" Hemsky is. He's a pretty good skill guy but he's a pushover that easily gets rattled, he'd be positioned 4th in scoring on the supposedly anemic Calgary offense, and he decides he doesn't want to play half the time and just skates around in circles.

Smyth is Edmonton's MVP. He was the only player who consistently shows up to play, which is Edmonton's #1 problem. Edmonton's management and their fans don't seem to notice this, then they wonder why every year it's a race to get in the playoffs at the very end an how they have an inconsistent teams. Players like Hemsky are a cancer to a team that needs to work hard all the time. He'd be a healthy scratch pretty frequently on Calgary's lineup with his work ethic.
