  • Rangers also signed Kenny Lofton.
At 40, he has to supply his own motorized wheel chair.

    • How many years did they give him? I'm thinking it was better than giving Gary Matthews Jr. 5 years. Yeesh, is that a bad deal.

        • Then if he sucks, he will only suck for one year and be gone. Given the market, it may well be the best option the Rangers have.

          • It's not like they're lacking hitters.

Have you ever noticed how many young ex-Rangers pitchers are starring in the majors? Probably not, so I'll tell you. Beau-coup of them.

In this market, that's a good contract (whereas the scenario in which he makes his minimum pay for the next 6 years is actually likely to be bad for the Sox, because that means he's pitching poorly, hurt, or both).
If you do add up both the posting fee and contract value, it comes to about $17 mil on the low end and $18.5 mil on the high end, which is probably what he would have recieved in this market as a free agent. Even though he was bent over a barrel, I never thought I'd see the day when Boras compromised this much.

              • Boras may not have exactly compromised. If his client wants a deal, there's not much Boras can do, and he sure as hell doesn't want to **** in his own nest as far as potential to get Asian players into major league contracts through him.

Did Epstein get a lobotomy during his "retirement"? I'd take Trot Nixon for realistic money over the injury-prone and over-paid J.D. Drew any day.
Epstein was originally lucky and stupid. Now he's just stupid, if you look at the overall context.

Drew v Nixon is one example, the shortstop fiasco is another. Gonzo made six errors all year at short, Lugo's never had less than 20 (including a lot of throwaways), and only .060 diffirence in career OPS, but Lugo gets way more money than re-signing Gonzo, and more money than it would have taken to retain Cabrera back after '04? If offensive production is such a premium, why bring back Mirabelli?

Not very long ago, Epstein was talking fiscal responsibility out the ass, and how there was a risk of overinflated deals hamstringing teams financially for close to a decade, and how the Sox weren't the Yankees. So now 200 million later for just three players, and there still isn't a closer in sight? He's spending money like a crackhead who just found the winning lottery ticket.

I still say Steinbrenner has a voodoo doll of Theo that he sticks his dick into.

                  • Quit your bellyaching. You're gonna have a good team to root for next year.

We had a good team to root for the first 2/3 of last year, too.

Next year will be good if you don't mind the flip-flopping from the front office, the overspending in the context of prior statements regarding strategy, and the marginal-at-best bullpen without a closer. Good, at least until Drew show's he's still made of glass, Lugo shows he can easily throw 20 rows back of the dugout from the hole in short, and pick your key injury of the moment.

Damn straight. It's a friggin' prerequisite. None of that complacent, God-and-the-universe-owes-it-to-us MFY offseason 'tude.
