  • AGI is not a neutral source, Arrian. They are hostile.

    Other peer-reviewed studies have also found
    abstinence programs to be effective in reducing teen
    pregnancy and teen birthrates. An April 2003
    study in Adolescent & Family Health found that
    increased abstinence among 15- to 19-year-old
    teens accounted for at least two-thirds (67%) of the
    drop in teen pregnancy rates. Increased abstinence
    also accounted for more than half (51%) of the
    decline in teen birthrates.9

    Teens from 1991 to 1995,” Adolescent and Family Health, Vol. 3, No. 1 (April 2003), pp. 39-47.

    An August 2004 study in the Journal of Adolescent
    Health found similar results: 53 percent of the
    decline in teen pregnancy rates can be attributed to
    decreased sexual experience among teens aged 15-
    17 years old, while only 47 percent of the decline is
    attributed to increased use of contraception among
    teens.10

    in the 1990’s?,” Journal of Adolescent Health, Vol. 35, No. 2 (August 2004), pp. 80-90.

    • More recent (2006) stuff from the same site:

      Young people deserve access to the full spectrum of sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion, contraception and gender-affirming care, yet they often face unique challenges when seeking care. The Guttmacher Institute tracks legislation that affects adolescents’ lives and produces research and policy analyses that emphasize the need to equip young people with the tools to have agency over their sexual and reproductive health.

      • I've never encountered AGI before, Ben. You say they're hostile. I assume there is a reason you say that?

        Whatever, I bet there's plenty more out there, not from AGI.

            Apparently they're an offshoot of Planned Parenthood, who are simply murderers in Ben's eyes.

              Or are they "hostile" too?

                  Found a different study. They have all the regression analyses for all the different things.

                  From what I can see by far the most significant risk factor for Pledgers is being raised outside of a nuclear family.

                    Not to let facts get in your way, but they haven't been associated with Planned Parenthood since 1977.

                      I have no reason to believe the reference is false. I certainly don't have the time nor inclination to alter the sources.

                        Center facts. Shape policy. Advance sexual and reproductive rights.

                        While Alan F. Guttmacher was president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and a leader in the International Planned Parenthood Federation in the 1960s and early 1970s, he saw the need for the institution that now bears his name, and he nurtured its development.
                        Let's be real here. The founder of AGI was a former president of Planned parenthood, which is a wee bit stronger than mere 'association'.

                        • A comprehensive view of sexual and reproductive health. The Institute regards sexual and reproductive health as encompassing a wide range of people’s needs from adolescence onward. The Institute works to protect, expand and equalize access to information, services and rights that will enable women and men to

                        •avoid unplanned pregnancies;
                        •prevent and treat sexually transmitted infections, including HIV;
                        •exercise the right to choose abortion;
                        •achieve healthy pregnancies and births; and
                        •have healthy, satisfying sexual relationships.
                        Dr. Sharon Camp, President and CEO of the Guttmacher Institute, has advised Guttmacher’s Board of Directors that she is stepping down, effective July 15.

                        For many years the leading spokesperson in Washington, DC for international family planning programs, she was also largely responsible for bringing together the highly successful International Consortium for Emergency Contraception and served until April 1998 as its Coordinator
                        She has served as an elected director of the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA), AVSC International, Management Sciences for Health and Population Action International
                        Now, if you believe they are neutral on this issue, I've got a bridge in brooklyn for sale. Cheap.

                          • So you get to dismiss anything associated with PP, but I have to trust The Heritage Foundation (or rather The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, which I'm unfamiliar with)?

                            In addition, making a virginity pledge is not associated with any long-term negative out*comes. For example, teen pledgers who do become sexually active are not less likely to use contraception.
                            I hope this is true. It suggests, however, that SOMEONE is telling these kids about birth control. Thank goodness for that.

                            Conse*quently, it would be best to expose teens to more, rather than fewer, pro-abstinence messages.
                            That's their basic conclusion. And hey, whaddya know, I do not disagree! That's just fine.

                            I've noted before that I think abstinence has its place in sex education. Relying solely on that approach, however, isn't gonna get it done.

                            -Arrian

                            p.s. I personally find the whole "pledge" part creepy. I'm not sure why. But anyway, the idea that it's best to not have sex willy-nilly is one that I've never argued against. I intend to impress that rather strongly on my own offspring.

                            • Oh, I just caught this bit at the end, from Heritage:

                              While it is true that, bowing to popular pressure, most current sex education curricula claim that they promote absti*nence, in reality, these programs pay little more than lip service to the topic. Most, in fact, are permeated by anti-abstinence themes
                              This does not match up with my experience. I went to a public school in liberal CT and abstinence was definitely presented as the best way to avoid: a) pregnancy; b) disease; and c) emotional issues you may not be ready to deal with.

                              Looking back, it was pretty darn mature.

                                I'm saying they are joined at the hip, PP and the AGI. Always have been. "Family Planning" and "reproductive services" are euphemisms for contraception and abortion.
