I recommend to you the 'Earthsea' Trilogy by Ursula K. Le Guin. Far more enjoyable than a lot of allegedly adult fantasy/science fiction...

Psst. The origin of the species is the amoeba. --I hope that doesn't wreck the ending for you.

                • Godel, Escher, Bach: The Eternal Golden Braid by Douglas Hofstadter

Early Greek Philosophy by Jonathan Barnes

How To Lie With Statistics by Darrell Huff

Hofstadter's offering is by far my favorite of the three but also the most voluminous. Huff's book is good all around but nothing too challenging, though still quite relevant. Finally I picked up Early Greek Philosophy just so I could have a bunch of uncommon quotes to wow people with (For some reason people equate obscure quoting with intelligence). It's actually been a fun little read both in terms of learnign a bit about Ancient Greece, but also for the concepts offered. Crazy as they sound they are quite entertaining for speculation.
Lysistrata: It comes down to this: Only we women can save Greece.
Kalonike: Only we women? Poor Greece!
