I used to have China and Russia on my list of places to not go, because no matter how unlikely, they may choose to pick me as the pawn in some larger game. This despite knowing that even then they would likely choose someone who is not me who they could make a case with semblance of cause (e.g. drug possession, journalist == spying, dual nationals, etc). Never thought the U.S. would be on that list.

My observation is the U.S. approach is worse, not because the charges are Trumped up, but because they serve no purpose. China and Russia do it for leverage with the country whose citizens they target. Abhorrent, but at least rational. U.S. is doing it out of apparent sadism

Columbia University student sues Trump administration over threatened deportation

Yunseo Chung, 21, has lived in the U.S. since she was 7 years old

A Korean American Columbia University student, who is a legal permanent U.S. resident and has participated in pro-Palestinian protests, sued the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday to prevent her deportation, a court filing showed.

Yunseo Chung, 21, has lived in the U.S. since she was seven, but her legal team was informed two weeks ago that her lawful permanent resident status was being revoked, according to the court filing in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

The Trump administration says her U.S. presence hinders its foreign policy agenda, according to the lawsuit. Chung has not yet been arrested. Immigration agents have made multiple visits to her residences looking for her.

Actions against Chung "form part of a larger pattern of attempted U.S. government repression of constitutionally protected protest activity and other forms of speech," Monday's lawsuit said.

"The government's repression has focused specifically on university students who speak out in solidarity with Palestinians and who are critical of the Israeli government's ongoing military campaign in Gaza."

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) alleged Chung has engaged in concerning conduct, including when she was arrested by police during a protest at Barnard College that DHS termed "pro-Hamas."

The DHS spokesperson did not elaborate further on the specifics of that conduct in question but said she was "sought for removal proceedings under the immigration laws" and will have a chance to present her case before an immigration judge.

Trump has pledged to deport foreign pro-Palestinian protesters and accused them of supporting militant group Hamas, of posing hurdles for U.S. foreign policy and of being antisemitic.

Protesters, including some Jewish groups, say the administration wrongly conflates their criticism of Israel and support for Palestinian rights with antisemitism and support for Hamas. Human rights advocates have condemned the government's moves.

Not really by Voltaire, but still a nice quote.

Sorry dauphin but that's paranoia talking. Why on earth would russia or china hold you? then again I'm judging from a greek persective.

russia will never hold a greek even if he said putin scks d!ck. there is a relationship that is very specific. that includes not harrasing ordinary people. china, hell we are teh gateway for china to europe. we vote in favor of china when it violates human rights. why would they bite the head that feeds them

America, unlike russia or china, I WANT to visit. I take the chances that a guy there might not like my face and harass me. I still hold the faith that america has not turned into a dark dictaroship.

even in turkey I feel safe in visiting. I wouldn;t visit when I was a soldier because they are paranoid, but now, yes

                Exit bans are a thing.

Canada updates travel advisories for U.S., China after recent tensions | CBC News

The Canadian travel advisory to China also warned that non-violent acts such as financial crimes may incur "severe punishment" in the country. It adds that travellers may also face an exit ban if they are linked to people "in any open civil or criminal investigations, including business disputes."

Ottawa said affected travellers may not realize an exit ban has been placed on them until they go through Chinese customs and immigration controls when trying to leave China.

A person I know (living in Singapore) was detained by Chinese border control when they were visiting there, and asked a lot of questions about a person they knew in China before eventually being released. Detention doesn't even need to be about you, but the people you are connected to.

                    More in depth:

“I don’t just want to go back,” because officials can “stop you for whatever and you cannot leave,” one naturalized U.S. citizen from Shanghai told NBC News.
