  • Apparently, we now have secret police...

    Quoting a quote...

The ACLU has released the video of Mahmoud Khalil's unlawful arrest, taken by his 8-months pregnant wife. Things to notice:

    - The officers are in plain clothes.
    - One officer keeps saying "stop resisting" when Mahmoud is clearly not resisting.
    - They are driving unmarked cars.
    - The officers do not say the charge for the arrest (and there still have not been any charges).
    - They entered a private building, and the university still has not said whether they gave the university a warrant first, as the law requires.
    - The officers refused to identify themselves.
    - The officers refuse to speak to Mahmoud's lawyer.
    - One officer gives her an address where they are taking her husband, but fails to mention that they will be putting him onto a plane to Louisiana as quickly as possible to keep him out of reach of his wife and his lawyers.
    - The officers refused to identify what agency they were with.
    - The officer's kept telling Mahmoud's wife "to get on the sidewalk," and implied they would answer her questions in a minute.
    - They then drove off without speaking to her.

This is what we have historically called "secret police." The general definition of secret police is "Police established by national governments to maintain political and social control."

Some examples from history would be the Nazi Gestapo, the Russian KGB, and the East German Stasi.

If you're not secret police, you can wear a uniform. You can identify yourself when asked. You can speak to citizens about what is happening. You can give a clear reason for an arrest. You can speak to lawyers. You can show warrants to organizations and individuals.

If you roll up and disappear people, you're secret police.

secret police would dump his body in the woods

I've seen different theories, one is distracting Maga from the lack of promised deportations, or by making an example of him people protesting Israel's genocide would shut up. Or maybe Trump is expediting a high profile court case to settle the matter. A win-win for Trump, either the courts side with him or they toss the deportation on 1st Amendment grounds and Trump can tell Maga he tried. I can't see Trump deporting the people picking our crops and mowing his greens.

This is a 1st Amendment issue, pure and simple. This thought police crap is right from the "strongman" playbook.
No actual charges, no evidence of any crime. Just a legal resident expressing his opinion. The arrest itself was clearly illegal.
Back in our (Vietnam era) day, protest was a core component of the college experience in America.

    He's trying.

Trump's trying to invoke The Alien Enemies Act to deport people without due process. He's directed ICE to "deport them all". ICE is saying they need $2 billion more to follow Trump's directives. Congress just passed a $485 million increase in funding for ICE as a temporary stopgap until they can pass the budget in which they plan for at least $10 billion more for ICE and border security.

It costs about $10k to deport someone (with due process). ICE asking for $2billion more through September would suggest they are looking at a couple hundred thousand deportations. Maybe a lot more if they can get around due process.

Good luck proving you're a US citizen to ICE if they come for you

US deports hundreds of Venezuelans despite court order

A plane carrying more than 200 Venezuelans deported by the US has landed in El Salvador, hours after a US judge ordered the Trump administration not to do so.

They don't have to listen to judges anymore.

No one's safe anymore if they're willing to ignore due process.

As far as Constitutional Rights, that was written for citizens.

No. The constitution applies to everyone in the country. Most rights are for persons, not just citizens.

But in any case, how are you supposed to protect rights of citizens if the executive is allowed to ignore the Constitution, laws, and court orders?

14th Amendment is clear that due process applies to all persons. It sets out specifically all people (whereas elsewhere it says citizens)

Just in case black people were not considered citizens, maybe?

Ignoring 5th, as it just says all persons (and assume it’s the federal equivalent of 14th in this regard)
