I cannot believe everyone has forgotten how horrendous Lyndon Baines Johnson was.

He was an old-school backroom deal-maker who sent many of my contemporaries off to die in VietNam. And yes, he seemed to enjoy hurting his dogs. But LBJ was also arguably the last of the great compromisers to sit in the White House. And that's what got us the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. The Clean Air Act. The Fair Housing Act. Medicare. Medicaid. In terms of legislation, he was an absolute monster. It took Texas-sized balls to make those things happen. These were political poison pills, so much so that they kept him from running for a second term.

            Horrendous? Not in my view.

I am inclined to drop Clinton, JFK and Truman first. But I agree that LBJ was problematic.

(Actually Nixon also did good while not being a good person. I do favor LBJ over Nixon because I feel like relatively Nixon did a lot more that was bad (and I feel similarly about Reagan too).)

Protest vote vs pchang. So hard to know how 8 years of JFK would have compared to LBJ but, thrust into the role, he was aggressive as well as effective in getting big things done.
George Bush was arguably evil and positively corrupt AF. Ex-head of CIA as POTUS was just such a bad idea.
