Ronnie hanging on by a thread. Sigh... Am I the only one who remembers the malaise the Nation was experiencing at the end of the Carter years and the sense of National rejuvenation that Reagan brought? Sigh...(again)

Reagan didn't bring about ****. The economy recovered as it always does after a downturn and dumb people think Reagan magically did it. I remember how Reagan blamed the AIDS epidemic on gays. I remember how he almost started WWIII in 1983 with overaggressive military exercises. I remember his ****ty supreme court appointments, his crazy religious beliefs, the Iran-Contra affair, cutting services for the mentally ill, being mentally ill himself and not resigning, and generally being a smarmy ****. oh and increasing government spending despite proclaiming his belief in small government. So **** Reagan.

None of which defines his greatest value of restoring America's confidence in itself. We could debate a lot of these points, but I will not argue that Reagan was perfect by any stretch. Still...I firmly believe that he was the right man at the right time for what the Nation needed.

Not exactly a murderer's row of excellence. Kind of a sad lot overall. I most admire Jimmy Carter and Ike as humans. Jimmy was brilliant and a true public servant, but was not as effective a President as several others. Historically, there's no denying that FDR just freaking changed the game. Proved government could make life better for the common man, and made it work. Oh, and navigated WW2. By far the most consequential President on this list.

Perspective: Eisenhower was in office when I was born ('53). Kennedy (beloved by my Catholic family) is the first President I remember.

For what it's worth, and despite his very real problems, I don't think that Reagan is the second worse, or even the third worse, modern president. Probably fourth or fifth.
