The results speak for themselves. You were fapping along to Putin and his plans for a quick victory in Ukraine thereby presenting the west with a fait accompli. Some sort of peace favourable to Russia would be forced upon Ukraine and any imposed sanctions would be eased.

Instead he's bogged down in a longer war (and even longer occupation should he win). Sanctions have crushed your market, your currency has hit record lows, and international pariah status has made almost anything/everything Russian taboo.

Could also be to justify the war domestically - IIRC the Kremlin claimed early on that Ukraine did lotsa things (nazis, genocide, whatnot), incl. trying to get nukes.

Which is kinda weird (even for Putin's standard) when you think that Ukraine gave up all the nukes which remained there after the breakup of the Soviet Union in return for security granted by US, Uk and - irony - Russia.

Random thoughts:

As for nuke threats: while they are always serious when coming from a country that uhm...has nukes, Putin seems to overruse them. He started with the nuke excercise on the weekend before the invasion, which was obviously a clear, and public signal. Later he warned of "consequences you never seen before " in case of interference, and, as a 3rd step, talked about alert levels being raised. So question is: are they really serious in the end.

Historians point out that in the past all of the more serious crisis involving possible nuke-use began in silence early on - there were no public announcements that Russia would put missiles to Cuba (it was found out by US recon), and no public warnings when Russia misinterpreted Able Archer 83 as not a NATO excercise, but a real build up for war.

So the thinking goes that those public threats are not serious, at least for now, unless there's credible recon/intel of changes in posture of those nuclear forces. Which could change tho. So quite some text for saying
