As for nuke threats: while they are always serious when coming from a country that uhm...has nukes, Putin seems to overruse them. He started with the nuke excercise on the weekend before the invasion, which was obviously a clear, and public signal. Later he warned of "consequences you never seen before " in case of interference, and, as a 3rd step, talked about alert levels being raised. So question is: are they really serious in the end.

Historians point out that in the past all of the more serious crisis involving possible nuke-use began in silence early on - there were no public announcements that Russia would put missiles to Cuba (it was found out by US recon), and no public warnings when Russia misinterpreted Able Archer 83 as not a NATO excercise, but a real build up for war.

So the thinking goes that those public threats are not serious, at least for now, unless there's credible recon/intel of changes in posture of those nuclear forces. Which could change tho. So quite some text for saying

Yeah, I agree with most of that. I think it is a warning for NATO to keep their militaries out as Putin knows the Russian army isn't up to that caliber of opponent.

I don't think Putin is insane enough to start a no-one wins nuclear exchange, I just think he miscalculated. If he is actually insane enough to do that we can only hope the subordinates tasked with carrying it out have at least on ounce of self preservation instinct and refuse to comply and toss the madman out.

I don't think Putin is either stupid or insane Serb. He is a rather accomplished authoritarian thus far.

I do think that he seriously miscalculated in this instance. My hunch is, as I mentioned earlier, he is the sort of leader that causes his advisors to hesitate telling him the truth and offering sound advice. Trump was similar in this respect.
