They attacked him out of self-defense, at least one of them did. So they (at least one of them) 'attacked' him for the same reason he 'attacked' them.

My understanding is that Rosenbaum, and another person, may share some fault for the situation. I would argue that Rosenbaum at least is dead while Kyle is not, which impacts the moral fault.

The kid chose to be an active armed combatant in another state that was home to neither his land or property. He wrecklessly put himself and others at risk by his actions.
I don't think he is a murderer. I think he's a stupid kid who didn't consider the consequences of his actions (i.e., in creating the situation where he may kill someone).
