The point is perhaps up to 99% of US COVID19 deaths may have been avoidable with an intelligent and coordinated response to COVID19. Instead we got Trump's swiss cheese xenophobic approach to international travel, no coordination, and that resulted in 215k and climbing deaths, along with harsher internal lockdowns and economic damage than necessary.

New Zealand is in the perfect situation for that strategy because they didn't yet have the virus and they can effectively control their borders. Maybe the flatten the curve option was better for us, maybe it wasn't. But no one in the US was calling for closed borders. So don't blame Trump. Touted his late stoppage of flights from China, which still allowed flights in from China
And did pretty much nothing else...
