Well they should stopped travel out of NYC temporarily, but beyond that I disagree.

It's a similar reason as to why Trump's travel bans were only xenophobic props. China but not the rest of the world, when it was already spread internationally. Even Chinese nationals could still get in. Europe but not UK, when UK was already a hotspot. Completely pointless in regards to stopping the spread.

Being opposed to the CCP isn't xenophobia. It had nothing to do with that. The UK government isn't anything like the CCP, and they didn't do what the CCP did.

Travel restrictions/quarantine/contact tracing/testing in a pandemic are about protecting citizens. Letting people in without testing or quarantine from known hotspots completely undermines the point of having any travel restrictions at all.

Trump's travel bans were useless from a health and safety perspective. All it served to do is to drum up xenophobia. It fueled attacks on Asian Americans, and did nothing to stop COVID19.

Neither did European countries. The point is letting infected from X makes travel ban from Y pointless from a health and safety perspective.

I remember Italy and Belgium being much worse than the UK.

Doesn't matter. When you let anyone through without quarantine, testing, and contact tracing it breaks the dam. Trump, just like with his wall, only built a small fraction of that dam. Even Chinese and Europeans were able to flow around through 3rd parties.

It was pointless pandering to his base.

BS. That propaganda comes from the CCP. It's exactly what they do to cover up the truth. You aren't helping anyone. You're just helping authoritarians. If you want to help Asians stop carrying water for the CCP.

I think the virus was already here. The objective was to slow the spread.

It's simple facts. A universal quarantine for all coming into the country, testing, and contact tracing is the method that works.

Trump's response didn't work, to the tune of 100x dead than necessary AND a bigger economic hit.

The intuitive claim is that more travel restrictions contribute to economic loss.

Not when a lack of travel restrictions leads to travel restrictions and interior lockdowns.

New Zealand did it right. US did it wrong. It's obvious.

Reality: NZ death/million is < 1% US. NZ economy took smaller hit than the US.

Kid: but it FEELS like ...

There shouldn't have been lockdowns to the extent that there was. The US is an economic engine, New Zealand isn't. When you shutdown the US you hurt the world.

Yet the virus still got into NZ, so what's your point?
